Too Close For Comfort

I hadn't talked to Dawn in a week, and I was yearning to hear her voice. Ever time one called the other, we would just miss each other. The time difference was really throwing us off, and besides, I was preparing myself for the fall semester of my freshmen year. I was kind of excited. Though I'd still be staying home with Reggie, I could manage my time more skillfully and hopefully be able to talk to Dawn more.

I missed that girl so much, I was actually looking forward to the new episode of her show, just so I could see her face. How pathetic.

Speaking of her show, the subtitled version was supposed to come out in an hour, so at least I'd have something to do today other than pointlessly strumming at my guitar.

~X~

There she was onscreen. My favorite blunette glowing in the light of my laptop. Her blue eyes shone with passion as each girl was assigned a group. Many girls groaned when Dawn received her placing, but she continued to smile and pay close attention to the host until he finished speaking.

They were all being assigned a song in category to challenge them, either singing, dancing, or rap, and that would comprise the group.

She was going to be a dancer and it was clear that the other girls weren't happy to work with her, some having worked with her in the other performance. I couldn't understand why they were so angry, it must be the dramatics of television.

As the episode went on, each performance was ranked and so was each performer.

When it was finally time for her to come on with her group, each girl took their spot on stage, all dressed in light pink and white, with their hair down. A girlish pop song began to play, and thus began the song.

Dawn had a glow to her that I've never seen before. She didn't smile too much, it stated earlier in the show that she was incredibly sick and recovering this week, but she seemed to be having so much fun on stage. A simple smile, simple and healthy singing. You could tell she was ill, but it was so impressive how she carried herself, especially with such difficult choreography.

I could feel my heart beating out of my chest. Though, my infatuation faded into concern as I soon saw her run offstage at the end of the number. She was the only girl to do so, until one girl followed her in haste.

Everyone seemed worried, but the host shared the news of her sickness, and she quickly came back onstage, though she was much paler than before.

Later on, everyone's ranks inside the group were displayed. Dawn seemed to be in the front of her group, folding her hands and looking down, whispering something to herself. When she looked up, she was immediately pleased, hugging the girl right next to her. The two of them seemed to be growing closer and closer.

When they displayed the ranks to the viewing audience, I could see that Dawn had received second place in her group despite her illness.

From seeing the ranks, the show skipped to the elimination. There was a huge pyramid of 81 chairs all with a number on it. On top was the number one. Out of 101 girls, 20 would be leaving, and a part of me was hoping it'd be Dawn.

They began by calling out the girl who Korea had voted to be number 80. They went down the line all the way to number two.

Then came the suspenseful part as they called out two names. Can you guess they were? Dawn Berlitz and Park Ji Su.

The host cried out flamboyantly. "One of you is Korea's hottest star right now, and the other is number 81. Both safe, but they have a huge difference. One of you could be sent home next elimination. That one of you is...

"Dawn. Please take your seat at the bottom of the pyramid."

Dawn's smile faded, as she quietly sat down. Other girls near her consoled her and Ji Su took her spot at the top of the pyramid.

The episode ended with Dawn in the confessional. She said tearfully, "I'm thankful that I'll get another two weeks on the show. Thank you to those who voted for me. I promise that I will work as hard as possible to prove that I belong in the top four. Because now, not only do some of you have faith in me, I have faith in myself."

My heart dropped. She wanted to stay? But how?

I then decided to make a huge mistake, to call the blunette with this uncontrolled rage. And unfortunately, she picked up. "Hello?"

"I'm so pissed at you right now."

"What did I do?"

"What did you do? You said you'd come straight back to the States, but you want to stay there and try to win when you know damn well that I need you here? How could you?"

"How could I? Paul, what did you do today?"

That caught me off guard. I stammered, "I-I was getting ready for college."

"Exactly. You want to know what I did today?" Before I had time to answer, she continued. "I spent my day working tirelessly with girls that I might never see again. Girls that are competing for the exact same thing I am. And you know why, Paul?"

"Why?"

"Because this is all I have! I don't have a future, I don't have money for college, I can't have a dream. All I have is this fucking show that I won't even win, so I'll see you whenever I lose, and hopefully you'll understand a little better."

And with that, she hung up.
