Beep. Beep. Beep.
I looked down at the watch on my wrist to check on the time. Nope, it's only 3:38 A.M. The aroma of coffee surrounds me but doesn't make me more alert at all. Why'd I sign up for the Red-eye flight shift? It's not like I'm alone with so many tired straggling travelers walking back and forth in front of me. In fact, it's actually quite busy. The calming sound of the walking travelers, distant announcements on the intercom, and beeping of the machinery make me doze off.
"Umm excuse me? Hi Miss? Hello?"
I twitch a bit hearing something. Where am I? OH WAIT I'M AT WORK. Immediately I stand up straight and scream my usual line.
"YES HELLO HOW MAY I HELP YOU?"
I hear chuckling in front of me, so I open my eyes and see a handsome brown-haired man in front of me. Embarrassment creeps up my cheeks as I stand there looking like an idiot in front of him.
"I am so very sorry sir. How may I help you?"
I stand there confused as the man just keeps smiling.
"Sorry..." I muttered quietly.
He laughs lightly and sweeps back his golden hair with his hand, showing black roots.
"Please don't be. I was just laughing at how cute you are."
"I-Uh I what?"
I wasn't sure if I was just hallucinating or if a cute guy just called me cute at almost 4 in the morning. A blush rises in my cheeks again as I pretend to have not heard him. As I take a closer look at him, he seems to be very well put together for someone at the airport this early in the morning. He's wearing a pink, fluffy turtleneck with a crisp black leather jacket. He also seems to have multiple piercings on his ears. Hot. Wait, what? Did I just call him hot? The night shift must really be getting to me.
"How may I help you today? Would you like to try our seasonal fall special?"
"Hmm. Do you recommend it?"
"Yes sir, it's really good especially for early mornings like this."
"If a cutie like you recommends it, then I guess I'll no choice but to get it then."
"Um-Uh yes Sir. Right away."
"Please don't call me sir. Do I look that old? Please call me Felix."
I was taken aback by his words and Aussie accent, which I never thought of as charming before now despite having heard it many times before.
"Sur-re Felix. Please wait a moment."
Retreating to my station to hide my red face from this charming stranger, I start working on drink. As I worked, I would occasionally steal glances at him looking down at his phone. I stared a second too long, and he raises his head and smiles at me. My heart jumps and beats a little faster.
"Here is your coffee, our seasonal fall special. Have a nice day and safe travel."
"Ah thank you. It smells like cinnamon and spices."
Once again, he flashes that charming smile at me. I get caught off guard and pause for a moment too long before saying the price.
"That'll be $3.96."
He reaches into his pockets and hands me a five dollar bill along with a piece of paper. I take the money and was about to give him his change when I realized he was no longer in front of me. I looked at the small piece of paper that said: "keep the change and xxx-xxxx". Immediately I blush again and look up for him. He'd already walked quite a distance off, but he turns around and winks at me.
I think I'll be looking to night shifts more now.
