"I know this is supposed to be romantic or whatever, but couldn't we have just stayed in and watched Netflix?", she cooed, feet rooted deep in the festering, reeking mud that covered the way up the hill. It would be hard to get rid of, especially because she was wearing white converse, but she'd worry about that later. Once she'd gotten this awful date over with.
"Sorry for wanting to do something special for our fifth anniversary, Allyson. I should've known you'd want to stay at home. As always.", his response was sharp, body tense as he stalked up the hill without looking at her. He was carrying a basket that contained the finest wine he could afford- he'd stumbled across it yesterday and had decided that a little alcohol might fuel their more than disappointing sex life. Her libido had been running low, so he'd planned tonight with one goal in mind- getting laid.
But then the rainstorm had wrought havoc in the city- and shit had simply hit the fan. He had spent yet another night on the couch, longing for her touch, cold and isolated under the thick mass of blankets.
"You know very well that I don't like being outside, Aaron! Why do you-"
"'Always force me to get out of my comfort zone?'", he interrupted her, rolling his eyes at the sight of her stumbling onto the muddy expanse that topped the hill.
"You're such a dick, Aaron."
Her lips were trembling now, and she hated herself for it, but his burning gaze had her straightening, composing herself. She didn't want to show weakness, couldn't do it, anyway. Despite how fragile, straining it was now, their relationship had been a steadying thing throughout all of high school, and when he'd proposed they run away, settle down in LA, so she could pursue her acting career, she'd agreed without so much as a second thought.
But then they'd run out of money, and her parents had refused to lend them the sum they'd asked, no, begged them for- and then things had gone downhill. They'd been kicked from the flat they'd tried so hard to keep, but at least they'd had each other. Until the fighting began, over the most trivial things- no, tonight was supposed to be her escape, the light at the end of the tunnel. So Allyson bit her tongue and stepped closer to Aaron, whose hazel eyes were dim with doubt and mute anger- not at her, but at the world; for taking all their illusions, for breaking them into pieces until only shards of once-great dreams remained, dusty from years of abandonment.
"I'm sorry, babe. I shouldn't have said that."
Alyssa tried to put as much earnestness and sincerity into her voice as possible, hoped it would defuse the situation, would soothe the unease rippling off of him in steady waves.
The rough edges in his eyes smoothed over as he took her hand in his, tracing her knuckles with his mouth.
The blanket was soaked as soon as they'd placed it on the ground, but it didn't matter to her, not when Aaron's shoulders were relaxed for once, not when light had finally entered his hazel eyes again. So she sat down, ignoring the cold and the wetness that spread and pierced the dark fabric of her jeans, and leaned into Aaron's touch who planted a kiss atop her head. Almost like back then, she reminisced, when we were 16 and had all the time in the world.
"I wished I could see the stars. Light pollution wasn't a thing back home.", she mused, prompting an unamused huff from Aaron.
"Wasn't a whole lotta shit back there in Alabama in general."
His voice was as bitter as the eyes that seemed to measure up the stars that were above them, somewhere, watching, ready to be wished upon.
Though the sky was black, a singular star was shining steadily, bright and grand, and Alyssa stared at it, in awe. Time passed and the star didn't falter, only grew brighter and seemed to grow immensely- unease settled in her chest as she realised that whatever it was came racing down, towards them, falling, at an incredible speed, growing with every moment that passed.
She wanted to scream, wanted to run, but she couldn't. She was frozen in place.
It was close now, covering the sky above them, dread and fear mingling in her gut.Aaron hadn't budged, hadn't moved at all, she realised. And when she turned around, he was unmoving, mouth gaping, eyes wide. Unbreathing.
Her cries pierced the icy night air, only to be swallowed by the towering trees encircling them.
Soon now, she realised, that thing will come crushing down on me.
And it did. The sounds of rustling feathers resonated in her ears as light devoured the darkness that had painted the night black, but she was not afraid.
There was something there, made of bright, golden light, a figure with wings that covered the stretch of non-existent stars and dusty sky behind them.
A voice that was not a voice echoed off the trees and seemed to seep into her head like thick syrup, bittersweet and golden.
Fear me not, believer, for I do not intend to harm you. I am a guardian of mankind and I have come to prevent your damnation.
Alyssa was shaking now- whether from shock or the cold, she did not know- as she took in the figure, the wings, the purity that radiated off of it.
There was one explanation, she thought as her hands grasped the silver cross that rested upon her décolletage, only one explanation- one she would not yet consider, despite how likely it seemed."What are you?"
First and foremost I am my Father's creation. I am a servant to his cause. I am older than mankind, and I will continue to exist when your kin are nothing but bones and flesh for the maggots to feast upon. Humans have called my kind many names- but I believe you already know the answer.
Angel. The word echoed through her mind, filling it up until it was the only that mattered- Angel.
She was on her knees in an instant, bowing as low as she could. Until laughter rippled through the light, causing her to lift her head quizzically.
Bow not before me, as I am prone to lay my claim on you.
Again, that syrupy voice erased the fear from her heart, filling it with golden light and joy.
"Lay your claim on me?"
I need a mortal form to navigate this world. My true body is rather conspicuous, is it not?
"But why me?"
A hum came from the mass of light.
Because you called for me. For blissful oblivion. For salvation. You prayed for it, every night. Now, I offer you this: I promise you on my eternal life that, when this is through, when I return to my home, you shall be greatly rewarded.
"What about Aaron?"
He will forget about you for the time being. He will move on- and if you want me to, I can ensure it stays that way.
A small nod was all the confirmation the entity needed.
As dawn rose on the horizon, Alyssa Morgan gave up all she was to save humanity.
