"StarClan is defeated, your homes are lifeless, all is lost for you," Tigerstar began his speech. "And this is only the beginning! Feel grateful to be alive now, because soon twenty-three of you will be dead!"
Dovewing shifted uncomfortably, wondering what Tigerstar meant. Twenty-three of you will be dead? What could that mean?
"Six cats from each Clan will participate in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death. You will have four days to train, one day to prepare for the interviews, and then an interview in front of all of StarClan, the Dark Forest, and the Clans. Remember, you can still be a tribute if you are in StarClan," Tigerstar explained.
Dovewing stifled a gasp. He can't do that!
"Mapleshade, would you like to announce the RiverClan tributes?" Tigerstar's voice was sweetened with false politeness.
"Why, of course!" Mapleshade purred. "The RiverClan tributes are: Mistystar, Oakheart, Icewing, Feathertail, Stonefur, and Reedwhisker."
"I'll announce the tributes for WindClan!" Breezepelt shoved his way to the front of the rock.
"Still a rude furrball..." Ivypool muttered beside Dovewing.
"Shhh!" Dovewing hissed frantically.
"The WindClan tributes are Crowfeather, Tallstar, Heathertail, Ashfoot, Morningflower, and Onestar," Breezepelt declared.
"ShadowClan's turn," meowed Brokenstar. "ShadowClan will send Littlecloud, Tawnypelt, Tigerheart, Dawnpelt, Smokefoot, and Snowbird."
Dovewing flinched at the mention of Tigerheart, then sat up quickly, hoping that nobody saw her distress.
"And lastly, ThunderClan!" yowled Tigerstar. "ThunderClan's tributes are Cinderheart, Ashfur, Hollyleaf, Firestar, Ivypool, and Cloudtail! Now, are there any volunteers?"
"I volunteer!" The words flew out of Dovewing's mouth before she could stop herself.
"For which cat?" Tigerstar inquired.
"Ivypool," Dovewing mumbled.
