once and only (the once-ler fanfic)

I ruined the world.

But then I also helped save I didn't mean to ruin the world, no one does. Driven by greed, that's what I was. I used to cut down about 20 truffula tree's per day, all for a stupid invention that no-one needed. I remember what I used to say.

"I'm being quite useful. This thing is a Thneed.

A Thneed's a Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need!

It's a shirt. It's a sock. It's a glove. It's a hat.

But it has OTHER uses. Yes, far beyond that.

You can use it for carpets. For pillows! For sheets!

Or curtains! Or covers for bicycle seats!"

Yet no-one needed a Thneed, and soon I had cut down the last tree. A brown-orange creature had warned me every single day not to, but I did. The moment The tree had hit the ground the creature, the Lorax disapeared telling me a single word, unless.

My inventions where all l had left, my family deserted me, the animals went and I was alone. For years I stayed in my crocked house, depressed and angry. My mistakes had cost me everything I ever loved.

Years and years later a boy, with brown hair and eyes, came to my house wanting answer to question I didn't want to answer. But he asked and asked about the trees so I gave in. The boys name was Ted, and I told him all the mistakes I had made as a younge man. He listened and came back each day for more.

Soon I remembered what I had, had all these years. The last truffula seed. Gladly I gave it to Ted and he fixed the world. By planting a single seed millions of truffula tree's grew.

There are two ways of looking at me. One way is me as a hero: If I hadn't had kept the truffula seed, the world would still be a mess. The other way is as a destroyer: If I hadn't destroyed the world it wouldn't had needed saving. You can decide how you see me.

Ted now vistits me every week, sometimes alone, sometimes with audrey, his girlfriend. We mostly just talk about his day and look at the new world that i used to be so used to. Today was different though. He asked me a question I hoped he would never ask.

"Hey, Mr once ler" He had said to me.

"Yes Ted" I replyed dryly.

"Did you ever fall in love?"

"What do you mean?" I said taken back.

"Well when you told me about the tree's, you never mentioned a girl" he shruged like it was nothing. Well to me it was something. I had fallen in love, with the girl who was so friendly with the animals.

"Yes Ted, I have" I sighed.

"Tell me about her" He begged me.

"Her name was Ellie, her hair was the lightest of blondes and her eyes the brightested of blues. She was friendly and fun, the type of girl that alwaysed looked on the bright side." I told him.

"Wow she seems nice" he smiled "tell me more"

"No, no" I shoke my head "It's 5 o'clock, you need to get home"

"But I want to here more of her" He pouted

"Come back tommorrow" I tell him, and with that I close the window and turn my back on him.

The one thing I wanted hidden forever was now going to be told. The only love I ever had.
