"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense." - Emerson

*Connor's POV* - Fifth Grade

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Fiona! FIONA?! I shouted at the top of my lungs.
"Stay with me! I CAN'T LOSE YOU!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"It's just a dream, it's just a dream, IT'S JUST A DR-."

I was disconnected from my nightmare, struggling to comprehend the tragedy that unfolded right in front of my eyes.

"What a strange nightmare," I said to myself while fighting through fits of breath.

In a dream, time feels stretched. A nightmare is just a glorified dream in this case.

Time didn't feel stretched at all, it felt infinite.

"It was just a nightmare," I reassured myself.

Recovering from my nightmare, I unraveled myself from the comfort of my sheets and peered over at the clock.

8:00.

I opened the curtains on my window, and noticed that Fiona wasn't at her window yet.

We lived next door to each other, so we would always chat before it was time to walk to school.

I rummaged through my room to find an object to throw at her window, but stumbled upon my five letters that I wrote in first grade.

They were all unopened.

Memories flooded in my head as I recalled the true emotions that I conveyed while I was writing them. All of those emotions, trapped and scrawled onto five pieces of paper.

To this day it still frightens me.

There's a part of me that yearned for the day to open the "happiness" letter.

But, as Ms. Torey stated: "You will open these letters when you truly feel these emotions."

There was a part of me that still wasn't truly happy.

"I'm here sleepyhead!" I heard Fiona chant from her house.

"Coming!" I replied.

I scratched my head, wondering where to place my unopened letters.

I decided to transfer them to a box I had in the corner of my closet.

In one swift move, I closed my emotions inside the box, and approached my window with a cheeky smile/barrier.

"Excited for the new school year?" She questioned, glancing to her feet occasionally.

"Yes, especially since you, Ricky, and I are all in the same class!" I pointed out, thoughts of the exciting year ahead consuming my thoughts.

Ricky was one of my best friends,

next to Fiona of course. He liked me for me, and I cherished that.

Fiona glanced up from the ground, and her eyes met mine. A smile spread across her face.

We stayed like that for what felt like minutes, just enjoying the silent beauty.

Our gaze was interrupted when Fiona checked her watch. She looked back at me and said: "Um... It's 8:15. I think we should... um... get going."

"Oh yeah... right." I agreed, recouping from the silence that was shared.

We met on the sidewalk and strolled our way down the street to meet up with Ricky.

"Hey Ricky!" We greeted.

"Hey guys! Ready for an amazing year?" He acknowledged cheerfully.

Fiona and I looked at each other and exclaimed, "Yup!"

And with that, we began our journey for the future ahead.

Looking at the positives, I am glad that I hadn't opened any letters yet. I had my whole life ahead of me to feel the sensation of those strong emotions.

I wasn't quite ready for what the future had in store for me.

Not one bit.
