I wasn't in the best mood this morning. I had the biggest migraine and I could hear my siblings downstairs screaming. I was the oldest of 3 kids. My mom left us here after the twins were born, there was only me, the twins, my dad and his girlfriend. I go to the bathroom and take a shower before school started. I step out and wrap myself in a warm towel. I wipe the foggy mirror to look at myself.
"Ugh. I gotta fix this." I go back to my room and throw an outfit on. I wasn't the most fashion forward girl. I didn't like the typical girly clothes. Back home, I was known to be the "edgy" one, I was an outcast most of my life, honestly. I find an old black band t-shirt and throw some blue ripped jeans on. I look around my jewelry tray and put on my favorite rings and necklaces .
"MARIANA! You're going to be late!" Jill yells from downstairs. That is my dad's girlfriend. He met her 1 year after my mother left. She really was like a mom to me. I run to my room and grab my black bag then quickly go downstairs to the kitchen. Jill was cooking eggs for the twins.
"Mari, are you going to be okay for your first day?" She asked. Mari (Mah-ree) was my nickname.
"I will be. It's not my first first day of school." I flipped my hair behind my shoulder. "Have you seen my keys?" I looked around in my bag. In that moment, the twins run in the kitchen jingling something. "HEY, MARCO GIVE ME THOSE!" I yell at my brother. He was 11. I run around the kitchen.
"Make me." He sticks his tongue out at me.
"You- when I get my hands on you, you're dead." He throws the keys at Adam, my other 11 year old brother. We all chase each other around the house until my dad walked in and swiftly grabbed my two idiot twin brothers.
"Here, Mari. Don't be late." He threw the keys at me and I catch them.
"You're my hero." I nod then go over to Jill and hug her. "Love you, see you guys tonight." I go to the entrance and find my red slip-on vans and run out to my car.
"Ms. Gomez, we are so pleased to have you at our school." I was in the principal's office. I had a meeting with him because, obviously, I was new and it was the middle of the school year. I was sunken in the chair and barely paying attention. He kept talking. "Since you are new to Oak Grove, i'll be assigning a student to guide you around the campus for a few days."
"I can manage my way around." I grabbed my bag and got up. "Thank you anyway."
"Mariana Gomez, I'm sorry but this is protocol, someone will be assigned to you." Principal Jones raised from his seat. I turned back around to face the door and opened the door to leave.
"I'm sorry too, but I'm going to be fine." I opened the door and-
"You called?" The very attractive student walked in.
"Yes, Mr. Gilinsky, this is Mariana Gomez." He gestured towards me.
"Hey, Mariana, i'll be your guide." He holds his hand out, expecting me to shake it.
"Call me Mari." I shake his hand. I had this weird feeling, it wasn't bad, but it was something.
"I'm Jack."
