The gray skies filled with smoke and fire, clouded over the overgrown field where Arthur lay riddled with injuries. Bullet holes in his arms and deep gashes in his skin bled out onto the bright green, dew-covered grass. Crimson filled his vision as the blood dripped from his hair into his eyes. "Little...further." He tried desperately to pull himself up, to keep moving, to do anything to get away, but his body had given out. Pain spread over every inch of him, seeping deep into his body.
Arthur began closing his eyes wondering if this is how he would go. He would never get to see the end of the war. He would never go back to his family. There would be no happy ending for him. He knew that much already, but facing such a defeat, hurt more than just his body.
A clicking noise a few yards away followed by quiet humming caught Arthur's attention but, he still couldn't move. His fate had been decided that day. Arthur only took comfort in knowing that even though he was dying, his last sight could be the beauty of the flowers growing around him. Pastels and deep red toned colors filled his eyes as he finally let go of his unrelenting thoughts that had pushed him to make it this far. "Dad... I wish I... could've made you proud. Sorry Mom, Cecily, I'm so sorry." He spoke to himself wishing they could hear him apologize. He wanted to apologize for everything he said. Leaving the way he did devastated them. His mother's words clung to him every day he was fighting. I lost your father, the love of my life. Now I'm going to lose my first born, my only son!
His last thoughts were something he wished he could say to her. You were right mom. I'm sorry.
