Sammy knocks on the bathroom door in Jazzgli's bedroom. Asking her when she'll come out. She doesn't answer. He hears silence. He knocks again louder but slower, calling her name.
"Jazzgli Sihi come on out. You've been in there for 25 minutes now. I'm sure you look great."
The bathroom door flies open. There stands Jazzgli dressed in a sleeveless sun dress with a bright flower design. Her long dark brown curls a static mess and her face wearing more makeup than usual. The dress fits snugly on her chubby body but flatters her shape. She covers her chest and hugs her arms. Sammy looks up to her eyes and sees her eyes welling up with tears.
"Jazzy babe you look amazing. I told you that you'd be fine. What's the problem?" Sammy smiles and gets closer. She backs into the bathroom and does a spin.
"I look terrible I hate it. This isn't me." She stands in front of the mirror staring at a foreign version of herself.
Sammy gets behind her and grabs a can of hair spray. He flattens down the static mess and says, "Boom problem solved. Now come on out."
She grabs her phone and runs out of the bathroom and makes her way to the door to her bedroom. "No Sam problem not solved! I hate it. I don't feel comfortable this isn't me!"
"Jazz you look great stop worrying so much." He smiles and walks towards her.
Jazzgli screams and storms out the door.
"This was a bad idea. I don't understand how you think I look good! I look terrible." Jazzgli runs down the stairs.
"Why are you fighting me!? I'm here to help you!" Sammy screams as he runs after Jazzgli down the stairs.
She stops and turns toward him with tears in her eyes and mascara tears running down her face. "What if you can't help me?"
"Jazz I can help you, you just can't keep running from me! Don't you ever get tired of running everywhere?" Sammy pleads and slowly walks down the stairs.
"Then I won't run." Jazzgli picks up her car keys and slams the front door. Sammy shakes his head and smirks, "That's hilarious."
He goes outside to see her in the car waiting.
"What are you waiting for?" He calls out to Jazzgli.
"For you to get in I'm hungry." Jazzgli smiles at the steering wheel and looks up, "Are you coming?"
Sammy smiles and locks the front door. He jumps into the passenger seat. He wipes away the black tear streaks on her face.
"There much better. You don't want to scare the drive-thru lady when we pull up to the window." He nudges her chin playfully and smiles.
Jazzgli smiles and says, "We could've finessed some free cookies because I look so sad." She laughs and drives off wiping her happy tears away.
"Jazzy?" Sammy whispers.
"Yes." Jazzgli answers while driving to their favorite fast-food restaurant.
"I'm sorry." Sammy pauses. " I should've listened to you the first time."
She drives in silence with a focused face on the road. Moments later she answers back.
"I'm sorry too Sam. I'm just not used to this and it's gonna take some time. I know you mean the best. I was just scared and when I'm scared..."
"You run. I know Jazz but you don't have to run anymore. Walk with me, take it one step at a time. There's no rush." Sammy pleads to Jazzgli.
"Sam promise me something?" She stops at the stop light.
Sammy looks at Jazzgli and sees her hazel eyes sparkling in the sun.
"Before I promise I just have to say how beautiful you look right now. Wow... Anyways what do you want me to promise?"
Jazz smiles and changes her mind. "Promise me you'll never forget to add extra cheese." She smiles at him and drives down the street waiting for his answer.
"Extra cheese huh? I mean who doesn't love extra cheese." He smirks and holds Jazzgli's free hand.
"I promise." Sammy kisses her hand and they ride to the restaurant in
peaceful silence.
