Claire's P.O.V
"Run goddamnit!" I panted as my sister and I sped down the old twisted street. She was falling behind, that's not good. If we go any slower we'll get caught. The sound of sirens grew louder as we started to slow down. I started to panic. "Violet! Keep running!" I cried. I kept trying to yank her up next to me. We can't get caught. If we get caught... it's over for both of us.
"Claire, I'm tired!" she kept yelling every few steps or so. She was faltering. She was giving up. We need to find somewhere to hide. Fast.
I yanked her arm and dragged her around a corner. The street was crowded with people. I pushed a guy with dirty-blonde hair out of the way. "WATCH IT DICKFACE!" I held onto Violet's had to make sure that she wouldn't get lost. "Just...a...little...further!" I panted.
I finally ran out of breath, and my lungs were burning so bad I thought they might explode, I yanked my sister into an alleyway.
I pressed Violet and myself up against the wall, almost making it look like we both were part of it.I prayed to God, (if there is one), that we wouldn't get caught. I signalled Violet to keep quiet. Her green eyes were filled with fear, as she shook her head up and down. My grey eyes darted around the alleyway, until I found two beat up trash cans on the other side. My ears picked the wails of police sirens. I glanced at the white, and might I add, glowing, sack I had wrapped around my arm. It was filled with food that Violet and I can not afford to loss.
I dashed over to the trash cans, and lifted one of the lids. Full. The second can was also full.
Shit.By now I was panicking. The cops were getting closer and I had nowhere to hide the stupid glowing sack.
"Claire! In here!" She pointed to a hole in the wall. I quickly threw the sack in there and covered it up with a trashcan.
I held my breath, as the police car came to a stop. Four cops got out. My heart was racing as I peered out of my hiding spot. The cops were questioning the pedestrians probably about us. I glanced over to Violet who was silently praying. Her eyes were tightly shut and her chest rapidly rose and fell.
I looked over to the cops again. They were all crowded over a black haired guy with a scowl. His mouth was moving rapidly while doing an occasional hand motion. A tubby looking cop finally lost interest and started walking around. His eyes glazed over the alleyway and I tugged my head back.
Then, fat tabby cat crashed into the trash cans I was hiding behind.Fuck.
The police officer cautiously walked toward the alleyway. His hand was on his gun. My breath hitched, and all time around me stopped. All I could think about was what would if he found us. Now I was also praying (even if I wasn't religious), begging God to forgive my sins.
The tabby cat started walking toward the cop, and he stopped dead in his tracks. As if God heard my prayers, the cop picked up the cat and walked back to the other cops.
"Hey, it's only cat. They're not here," he put down the cat and the other cops sighed and went back to their car. My heart was still hammering inside my rib cage. The car started to pull away and I let out a sigh. I got out of my hiding place and retrieved the sack. Violet put both her hands on her chest.
"They're gone," she said with disbelief. I sat down on the ground and opened the sack. "How long can we last on that?" She asked as she sat down beside me.
"About a two days." I said while closing the sack. "We need money. I thinks it's about time I looked for a job." I looked at my little sister. Regret filled every bone in my body for taking her with me and making her suffer. "Go back to our tunnel. I'll be there later." With that, I stood up and walked off.
