Chapter One

The party has begun without me.

Slowly, I descend the glass stairs that curve dramatically into the reception lounge.

I reach behind me for support. My friend Claudie squeezes back in assurance

Although its just a neighbourly meet and greet, I'm nervous.

The stairs have come to a stop. I scan the room, it doesn't look like a casual meet, it seems to be fit for royals. Flowers disturb every moment and conversation. More flowers than people.

My eyes swivel the room. Searching.

"Looking for someone?" An unknown hand taps my shoulder. Slowly, I turn around.

Sage.

He wraps his arms around my waist, a feeling of pure heaven. Claudie gives me an exasperated look.

"Well, you two, uh, continue doing that." She smirks, " I might even find him!"

Claudie turns around, popping a mini lamb burger in her mouth, leaving her dress swaying. Gold, but not garish, it brings out her caramel coloured skin. She looks beautiful.

"So, " Sage voices his opinions, "What would you like to do?"

Its his house. If I were in mine, I could think of a dozen things to do.

"Show me something. Something special." I whisper into his chest.

"Your wish is my command" he announces, waving his hand about like an orchestra conductor.

"Follow me" he says, pulling me up a flight of stairs. We go through corridors and pass by rooms- so many rooms it feels like a hotel. Just imagining to live here makes me dizzy. It seems like we come to a slow stop, like a car stopping for red traffic lights.

We have come to a halt beside a room with beautiful french doors. No lights are on but the curtains are open and moonlight floods the carpet. It appears to be mystic, a beautiful energy, just for me.

"Its.... Its....." I am truly speechless.

Everything from the cloudless sky to the way the moonbeams fall on his skin.

"Magnificent?" he finishes for me, " Its the only room I can go to to clear my head." he smiles. His lips are soft and curl in just the right place.

"Close your eyes" he says softly, so I do. Gently, he steers me by the shoulders through the room. I can feel the wind blowing across my skin. I'm nervous, but I trust Sage.

"Okay," he whispers, "Open your eyes."

He removes his hands from my face, and for the second time in one night, I'm speechless. You can see the whole city, see the full skyline. Its turned dark enough for the moon to come out and the populations lights to shine on, but you can still see a light fog hovering above the town.

It is truly breathtaking.

"Oh my... holy..." I gasp.

"It's beautiful, isn't it? Everyday I would come up here and watch the sunrise. The sun would be up and I would watch the construction workers build this amazing city. And now," he sat down, resting his hands behind him, "And now its beautiful" he says finally.

I peer around, not trying to be nosy, just expressing my curiosity.

"Here," Sage offers, " I'll show you the flower garden" he gets up and walks towards me.

"Inside?" I ask, gesturing towards the doors.

"We are on a roof you know? Not only do people have gardens on the ground, the have them up high as well" he laughs, and hearing that, I smile.

He gets up from his perch, and wanders up to me. His eyes are glimmering in the last rays of moonbeam.

"Its like, amazing," he says, mimicking my annoying way of slipping like into every second sentence.

"Oh, shutup" I say, playfully bashing him in the shoulder.

"You'll really like it," he says, suddenly serious, "people work on it everyday. " He takes my hand and its a romantic moment, just like the movies.

I have the right to be amazed. There are flowers of every shape and colour, from every place and country. Pale tea roses from China, vibrant orange tulips from Amsterdam and beautiful cherry blossoms from Japan. You could write a article, a book, an encyclopedia even, of how beautiful it is. White lighting bounces off the plastic protector thats laced outside.

"Is there anything else I should be ready for?" I joke shakily.

"This is it," he replies, "but you get a pretty good view from the balcony."

Taking my hand he leads me toward a small door that is covered in mystic ivy.

"Would you mind if I say its beautiful once more?"

We sit on one of the many bench seats that line the patio.

"Can we still see the city?" I get up and walk towards the railing.

"Summer wait!" Saige calls after me. There's pain in his voice.

"Whats the matter?" I ask.

" The railing- it isn't stable!" He's gasping now, as if hyperventilating. "Don't touch it!" He cries.

But my hand is already resting on the upside of the rail. Quickly, I take it off, but its too late. I've already started falling.

"Summer!"
