"Maybe we're just not meant to be right now." Lily says, looking down at her feet as she does. She knows that she's breaking his heart, it's the last thing she wants to do, but she just can't think of anything else.

They're both so young, and he's being so immature, she just doesn't know if she's ready for this. "I love you James, with my whole heart, but we're so young." She reaches out and takes his hand, "I'm not saying never, I'm just saying that right now, I don't know if this is our time."

"I'm not saying we're not meant to be, maybe we are, maybe someday we'll have a story of our great big love affair to tell our grandchildren, but I think right now, maybe it's just not time yet."

"Maybe we need to fall in love with other people, get our hearts broken a bit so we can put each other back together. Maybe we need some time apart, finish the war, and then find each other again.

"I'm not saying that we won't ever happen, that we can't ever be together, I'm just saying, maybe we're meant to be 10 months from now, 10 years from now. Maybe we're just not meant to be right now."

She can hardly look at him, the heartbreak in his eyes shattering her own. "I love you James, I just think that it might be time for me to walk away." She reaches up and cups his tear stained cheek, tears of her own flowing freely down her face.

She stretches up and brushes her lips lightly against his, "Goodnight James Potter, I'll see you around." With that she slowly walks away, leaving him standing stunned in the middle of the room, not giving him a chance to fight back.

She barely makes it back to the common room before she loses it. Thankful that she's alone, Lily sinks to the ground in front of the fire, silent sobs wracking her body.

The worry and doubt begins to fill her mind. What was she thinking? 10 years? There's a war raging outside of their door, they could have 10 days for all she knows. And doesn't she want to spend that time with him?

Sure, they're young, he's immature, but isn't she? Can't they grow up together? Aren't they already growing up?

Just as she's starting to realize how big of a mistake she's really made, the common room door burst open. A frazzled James flies through it, making it halfway to the stairs that lead up to the girl's dormitory before he realizes she's sitting on the floor.

He rushes over, falling to his knees in front of her. "You're wrong." He blurts out, a hand darting out to grab hers. "I mean, you're right about a lot of things Lily Evans, but you're wrong about this."

"We may not have 10 years, there's a war going on outside of these walls and for all we know we could die tomorrow. But I don't want to spend the little time I might have left missing you."

"You talked about a great big love affair to tell our grandkids, so let's start writing our story now. I don't have a heart for someone else to break Lily Evans, because when you walked out that door you took mine with you."

"I could hardly stand watching you leave and in that moment I knew. Lily, you're not just my past, or my present, or even just my future..."

"Lily Evans, you are my forever. I love you more than I can even fathom into words."

"I know, I have a lot of growing up to do, and I know that we're young, but Lily, the way I feel about you is something old. It's ancient. Its like from the moment I was born my heart was destined to find yours."

"I don't want to spend a single moment apart from you for the rest of our lives. I know this might be sudden, and I know you might say no, and that is perfectly okay, I can wait. But Lily Evans, I have to ask..."

"Will you marry me?"

Lily almost dies of a heart attack then and there.

James slips a hand into his robes, pulling out a beautiful ring. Lily can tell that it's old, that it's been in his family for ages. And now he's giving it to her. 'Because you're family now.' A little voice in her head that sounds suspiciously like James's says.

"Okay." She whispers, staring up at him with eyes bright with tears. "I'll marry you." He breaks out into the biggest grin she's ever seen. He slides the ring onto her finger and then kisses her so hard she forgets her own name.

As they fall back onto the rug, the warmth of the fire seeping into their bones, they know that they've made the right decision. When they're together, it doesn't matter what's happening in the outside world, it doesn't matter how much growing up they still have to do. When they're together, everything feels right.

They both know that they may not have year and years, but when they're together, it doesn't matter.

They have forever.
