We were both orphans and had been best friends for a while before it happened. Before our families were killed.
Our families were pretty wealthy and we had the biggest houses in the city, in the whole entire world for what we knew. We were six.
We were six.
Our families were close, so close that we lived next door.
Our families were going to have dinner together in her backyard that day. My family was already over getting everything set up so we could eat.
The two of us were playing in her tree house. We had just finished piling our pillows and blankets in the corner to make room for the stuffed animals we had made her brother lug up for us.
That's when we heard the scream. I don't remember much after that.
I just knew my mom was still at home.
Everyone ran over to my house.
We couldn't get down. We never went down if there wasn't anyone to watch us.
Then we heard the gunshots
So many gunshots
We didn't know what they were
We were scared
It was getting dark
And cold
We got tired and fell asleep huddled together in the corner with the pillows and blankets
We woke up when we heard police sirens
We were scared
We were just six.
