thursday night

Amelia stood in the kitchen of her brand new home making dinner as Leo pulled on her leg. "Mama!" he whined. She looked down to see Leo rubbing his fingertips together with his free hand to signify that he wanted more.

"Here, buddy," Amelia sighed, handing her son another piece of banana. "Bet!" Amelia yelled for the third time. "Leo, where is your sister?" Amelia groaned, turning her sauce down and heading to the living room. "Betty! Didn't you he-" Amelia stopped midsentence to see a huge fire taking over a neighborhood that was very familiar. "Is that?" Amelia asked. Betty nodded. "Does your father know?"

"I don't think so," Betty replied. Amelia pulled her cell phone out of her pocket. She dialed her friend's number and waited patiently. To no avail, the phone went straight to voicemail.

"No answer. Watch your brother! I have to go!" Amelia said, before running out of the house. Quickly, she hopped into her new 2019 Ford Expedition. As she started her twenty-minute drive, a multitude of scenarios played out in her head. "Come on. Come on!" Amelia rushed as she barreled down the highway.

No answer.

"Come on," Amelia frustratedly groaned as she dialed another number.

"Amelia?"

"Patrick! Where is Teddy? Are you and P.J. okay?" Amelia asked pulling up to the road block outside of Teddy's community.

"She got called in when the fire started. They are checking PJ out before they let me leave," Patrick explained. Amelia sat forward in her seat trying to look around the traffic with no luck.

"The house?" Amelia asked as black smog clothed the sunset. She heard a low sigh and ran her hand through her hair.

"Teddy's gonna be so disappointed," he replied. A bright idea that Owen was going to be split on popped into Amelia's head.

"Stay with us," Amelia practically yelled.

"Amelia, I couldn't. We couldn't. Owen and I don't have the best of friendships and your pregnant. I don't want the animosity to harm you or Emma," Patrick declined.

"Nonsense. Emma and I are healthy and you're staying with us. I'm outside the barricade. Bring PJ and you guys can borrow some clothes," Amelia insisted. Patrick knew that Amelia wasn't going to ask again. And he also knew that he didn't have a choice. He needed somewhere for his girlfriend and son to lay their heads that night.

"Fine," he gave in. Amelia smiled as she pulled off to the shoulder and put her hazards on. Right as she went to hang up on Patrick, Betty FaceTimed her.

"Hey Patrick, I gotta go! But I'm out here in my truck. I have Leo's seat in the back for PJ," Amelia said. The two hung up and Amelia switched to mommy mode. "Hey, Bet. What's going on?" She asked.

"Can you bring home some card stock? I have a presentation due tomorrow and I forgot about it," Betty asked. Amelia side eyed her daughter and folded her arms.

"Bethany Shepherd-Hunt, how long have you known about this project?" Amelia groaned. Betty bit her lip knowing how mad her mother was since she used her full first name.

"Since the beginning of the quarter," she timidly answered. Amelia narrowed her eyes at Betty.

"That was four weeks ago. Betty we had all this time! Why did you wait until the last minute?" Amelia asked. Betty shrugged and leaned against her fist.

"Sorry. I got busy with August. He really needs help with his sobriety and he doesn't have anyone else," Betty vaguely answered. Amelia's eyebrow shot up as she pushed her hair behind her ears.

"August? You want me to be okay with your excuse because of August? Betty you must really want me to take your keys," Amelia said. Betty shook her head and started to get ready to go. "Bet, come on. What have your dad and I told you so many times?" Amelia asked.

"Make better choices," Betty grumbled. Amelia watched the phone drop to Betty's side and swish between her leg and the house in short spurts.

"Exactly. I will put the money on your card. Get what you need and turn the stove off before you leave. I'm picking up Patrick and PJ, then I'll probably stop by the hospital," the neurosurgeon announced. Betty pulled the phone to her face and rolled her eyes.

"Thanks," she sighed. "I'll see you when you get home," she said. Amelia agreed and said her goodbyes before hanging up. She tapped her fingers along the steering wheel impatiently as she waited for her best friend's boyfriend.

Teddy glanced at the TV as she the chart of her patient back. When she left the fire was two neighborhoods away, now she couldn't even see where the fire was ending. As she went to grab another chart the sight of an unforgettable bottle that had rolled across her living room and kitchen floor numerous times, flashed on the screen. "Hey, Teddy, Mr. Hashberg just got his X-rays and he's ready for you in his room," April said. The words of the redhead slipped through Teddy's ears and past her brain.

"My son," she said in a whisper.

"What?" April asked looking around for the familiar blonde baby.

"O-on the tv! My son is on the TV," she said, pulling out her phone to see the numerous missed calls from Amelia, Betty, and Patrick. Frantically she dialed Patrick's number and pressed the phone to her ear. The ringing of his phone sounded oddly close, causing her to turn towards the ambulance bay where her man and best friend stood. Without hanging up, Teddy dropped her phone into her coat pocket and sprinted to them. Thankful that he saw her coming, Patrick was able to catch Teddy without stumbling too far back. Amelia watched Teddy peck Patrick lips a couple of times, before he put her down.

"About the house,"

"I'm just glad you guys are okay," Teddy interrupted. Without hesitation Amelia handed the seven month old to his mother and watched the baby boy light up to be in his mother's arms. The sweet sight of PJ slobbering on his mothers cheek made Amelia's heart melt. She slipped her hand over her baby bump, hoping that Emma would be just as sweet.

"I'm gonna go find Owen. Here are the keys, I will meet you guys at home," Amelia said, causing Teddy to furrow her eyebrows. The youngest Shepherd could see her presence was no longer needed causing her to scurry off.

"What is she talking about?" Amelia heard Teddy ask as she ran off to the attending's lounge.

upstairs

Amelia opened the door and came face to face with her sisters. "Amelia, what are you doing here? I didn't know you were on call," Maggie asked as she pulled off her scrub cap.

"I'm not," Amelia answered rushing to the bathroom to see that it was empty. Meredith and Maggie shared a look as they watched Amelia search the quit small room.

"What are you looking for?" Meredith asked, setting her coffee cup in the sink and leaning her back against the counter.

"My husband. Have you seen him?" Amelia asked. Meredith and Maggie glanced at each other with confusion.

"He left two hours ago. He said he was going home to be with you and that you'd called him," Maggie replied. Amelia rolled her eyes. She didn't want to make a huge scene of his blatant lie and pulled out her phone.

"Well that sure as hell didn't happen," Amelia quietly muttered, before leaving the lounge. Owen usually took Leo to work with him since his day starts so much earlier than Amelia's and she would take him home since she got off at 8 every day with only one to two surgeries a day since becoming pregnant again. And today she hadn't heard from Owen since she brought her a late breakfast after dropping Betty off at school and picking Leo up from daycare.

"They have disfunction written all over them," Meredith mumbled. Maggie nodded and went back to getting unready as Meredith grabbed a quick snack from the pantry. Everyone was starting to notice how out of sync Amelia and Owen have been since getting pregnant again. No one was truly sure what was happening with them, but everyone could see the end results if it didn't resolve itself soon.
