18-year-old ALFIE SOTO is sitting in his grandfather's study, it has been one month since he has passed away and Alfie is devastated. ALFIE is seen rummaging through boxes that his dad marked FOR ALFIE on it. He pauses at each item for a few seconds before setting it aside, when one envelope catches his eye. On the envelope has the words "For Alfie Soto, my curious grandson". ALFIE begins to open the envelope when his cousin SIERRA MALATCHI, a 17-year-old girl walks in on him. ALFIE is at first startled but then quickly gets annoyed and shifts his body away as he hastily puts the envelope inside his coat pocket. SIERRA tries to comfort him by putting her hand on his shoulder, but ALFIE shrugs it off.
ALFIE: I told you, I wanted to do this alone.
SIERRA: I know you did, but I couldn't let you, it's too hard on you.
ALFIE: (ALFIE turns towards her) What do you know about me? You know nothing about me or how I feel.
SIERRA: Alfie,-
ALFIE: Don't "Alfie" me! I told you I wanted to do this alone, but you couldn't respect that decision, you've never respected any of my decisions! You've never been there for me! You didn't care!
SIERRA: I never said I didn't care, Alfie! I said I didn't think you were making the right decision, hanging out with him. I mean look where he ended up-
ALFIE: Don't! (ALFIE stands up) I'm warning you, if you say one more thing about him and how he fucked up his own life, I swear-
SIERRA: (Getting up as well, equally as angry) You swear what? You swear that you would hurt me? You swear that you'll get revenge on me? Revenge for what! I didn't do anything to make him die, Alfie! Get that through your fat head, I didn't do anything to make him die! That was him and only him, not even you. I came here today to look through grandpa's stuff, not to argue with you so can you please stop acting like a child and start acting like an 18 year?
(Silence comes in between them, neither of them wanting to talk more about the subject. SIERRA sits on a closed box and exhales) Have you even found anything yet?
ALFIE: Not really. I found a couple of stamps and pennies. Everything is locked and dad doesn't want to break anything, trying to open them.
SIERRA: Your dad said to my mom that there was a box with interesting things in it for us to look at.
ALFIE: Nothing "for us", there was a box full of interesting stuff for me though.
SIERRA: (Getting excited now) Well, what's in it?
ALFIE: None of your business, it was marked for me, remember?
SIERRA: Alfie, that's not fair!
ALFIE: What's not fair? The fact that you never helped him out, and I was the only one who at least tried to help him, therefore he left me all of his prized possessions?
SIERRA: Alfie! Would you give it a break? What's done is done, we can't take back what already happened.
ALFIE: Well you could at least feel bad. You didn't even come to his funeral. No wonder I was his favorite grandchild.
SIERRA: (ignoring the last comment) Can we get back to what we were sent here to do please?
ALFIE: Fine.(silence once again comes over the two cousins, but this time it's more of a comfortable silence as they look through regular boxes. SIERRA finds a CD and a player. She puts the CD into the player and it starts playing a video, this gets ALFIE'S attention thus he breaks the silence)
ALFIE: What is it? A video? I didn't know grandpa made videos
SIERRA: I didn't either. It was in a package marked for the both of us. (ALFIE doesn't believe her so she shows him the package. ALFIE just gapes at it) Believe me now? (ALFIE nods his head slowly) Well, what do you say, wanna watch it?
ALFIE: Of course! Click play!(They start watching a short clip of a 71-year-old man in the very study that they are in right now.)
GRANDPA: (On film) Erm, is it working? Ok, ok. I think it is. Ok, so uhh hi. My intentions are for my granddaughter, Sierra Malatchi, and my grandson, Alfie Soto, to see this video. (he takes a breath) Alfie and Sierra, I know you guys have never gotten along, and I've always wished you have. Right now, Alfie, you have just left my study. You were warning me to stop creating different scientific projects because everyone was worried that I was losing my sanity. Only you knew the truth because you cared enough to listen to me. Sierra, I know you've always thought me crazy, but I do not blame you. Your mother never approved of my small science lab in the basement. I am creating this video clip of me, because right now, (checks his watch) at precisely 10:46 am, I may or may not die. I wanted to create this video of me because I want to be remembered if I do die, and I want to have proof of my discoveries if I do not. You guys will know if I have succeeded with my experiment, and, sadly, you will also know if I do not.
SIERRA: Wait, why is he telling us this?
GRANDPA: You might be wondering why I'm telling you this, and the reason is, is because I have a job for you. Alfie, in the letter I left for you, there are instructions. Sierra, the necklace I left for you, the key one, that key is to unlock a cabinet given to you in the instructions. Read the instructions and follow them carefully. Ok, I only have 10 more seconds left on my recording! (he rushes before time runs out) Whatever you do, do not tell anyone! I'm counting on you two.
