Chapter 3
How has this happened? At this very moment, I stand in front of a night club, Sam jumping happily beside me. My hair flat without the slightest curl and my dress so dangerously short it put fear down to my very soul. She also had done my make-up. And I must admit, it did make me feel like a real women, but the theatrics of it were just too overwhelming.
All she had to do was say those three words - I dare you. When she spoke them it was like a totally new person had taken me over. I was desperate to prove to her that I could party and that I could get away with it, but now that I am here and am standing in front of this club, I just can't find the will.
The constant thumping of the music making my heart race, fear beginning to swallow me whole, I start to shake. What am I thinking? Why am I here? What had gotten into me? Oh, father is going to have my head. There is no doubt about that.
"Come on. This line is going to take forever to get through. I think it's time we flirt our way in." I froze in my spot. Flirt? Of all the things we could do... she just had to pick that one.
"Um," I stutter. "Sam, can we just not go tonight? I have an early meeting with father." I whine, desperate to rid myself of this problem.
"No way in hell, are we going home. You said yes, and so here we are." Sam grabs my hand pulling me to the front of the line. Girls yell mean things at us when we pass making me cringe in fear.
The yelling girls have nothing on the bouncer, standing over six feet with dark, sadistic looking eyes.
"Hey..." I take note of Sam's husky voice, engraving it in my brain to maybe learn how to flirt. "It's my friend's birthday. We're looking for a wild night." She pushes her breasts against the man, but it seems as if nothing will budge him. She stretches up to whisper something in his ear, but try as I may, I cannot make out the words. I watch closely as his features darken and he gives a deep grunt.
"Fine, but only for tonight."
"Come on. We have wasted most of our time away!" Sam clucks as she pulls me along. The fear rises up in me again.
"I don't think this is a good idea. I mean, people will know who I am and if father finds out... Sam, look at these people. I don't belong here. Can we please go home? No, if you want to, stay. I can call Duke. He won't mind picking me up or..." Before I could explore my other escape options she pulls me onto the dance floor crowded with strange, hardly dressed, people.
"Shut up and dance." She screams over the music.
I slowly rock my hips back and forth afraid to let go. This is bad. Very bad. The feeling of her hands on my hips shocks me. "Relax. I'm just showing you how to dance. Now just pretend I am a guy for two seconds and you will be rocking it in no time." She pulls my bottom smack against her front and begins doing a sort of lunging movement. The feeling is extremely strange and awkward, and I squirm to get away.
I never get the movements right and Sam gets upset with me for it. "Let's go get some drinks to see if any guys will hit on you." She giggles and I place my guard on a higher degree.
She pulls me along while yelling at the bartender. "I'll have a Fuzzy Navel."
"I'll just have a Coke..." I speak just load enough so that he can hear me over the music. I'm not about to break a law and drink underage. I'm already deifying my father.
"Live a little." Sam rolls her eyes and then winks at me. I have always wished that I could have her spirit. The way she is free and open. As if she could sprout wings and fly to the moon leaving the world behind without a care. I guess that is why I love her so much. She's like a sister I never had, and will never have.
