Hard to Get? Alternate Ending

Louis's POV

Five years later...

"Your wife is going into labor," the nurse alerted me. I was so scared at that moment. Melody was giving birth to our first child exactly on time.

I silently followed the nurse to room 316. I remember the room perfectly.

I heard screaming immediately as I entered the room. I could hear various machines beeping, but I only focused on Melody.

"Hey baby." Every word was labored. I could see the beads of sweat running down her face.

Though I saw her, I felt as if she wasn't really there. The sparkle that usually took over her eyes had gone along with all the color in her lips. I wondered if something was wrong.

Like all births it took hours. Every second of it I was with her though. I knew that this was painful for women, but I thought that Melody would be ignited with determination during this because of our child. Instead she seemed tired. Maybe this was normal but it seemed odd to me.

Finally when it was all over, we were both crying and smiling and laughing. Our baby, now named Anne, had been cleaned off and dressed in hospital clothing, and while she slightly resembled an alien since she was newborn, she was our beautiful daughter.

"She's beautiful," Mel said softly from her bed, holding out her arms for Anne.

"Yes she is," I agreed and I felt tears welling up in my eyes.

After only a minute she handed our girl to me to hold, which I was grateful for but surprised. That's when I knew something had to be wrong.

"Are you okay, Mel?" I asked with concern, taking note of her weakness.

"I've felt short of breath since Anne," she said and I did hear her struggling to breathe.

"I'm sure that's normal," I said. "I'll just let them get Anne back into care since I know you've had a long day."

I did give up my daughter for a bit but even though I was reassuring Mel I was very nervous. I alerted a nurse right away who came to check up on Mel who said she felt very weak. Soon a doctor was in the room and then next thing you know there were three doctors and she was being wheeled out with machines still going crazy.

"What's going on?" I desperately asked the nurse I had previously called.

"It's going to be okay, sir," she said.

"That's not answering my question!" I cried with frustration. "Please tell me! She's my wife and the mother of my only daughter."

The nurse hesitated. "She may be experiencing heart problems. In our files we do have records of the possibility of this occurrence so we are prepared. She is very lucky to have already been in the hospital. Thanks to you her condition was noticed prior as well. Women are always drained after pregnancy but not like her so it was very intuitive of you. I can promise you she is in good hands so please just relax here and I will give you updates as they come."
