Burning Plains

Prologue

Prologue

Pine needles dug into my feet, and I had to shield my eyes from the wind as I ran. Trees bent and broke above and all around me. The entire area was tearing itself apart, it seemed. The Tall Pines were falling. They fell in my way and almost on top of me. The Aves blew strong gusts of wind, tripping me as I fled. Screams of terror echoed through the valley, my own and of the people who came here. Tears streaked my face as the Sacred Valley was destroyed. For every tree that fell, the forest's Life dimmed, and their Shadows grew stronger and broke free of the trees. Their presence was horrifying, and I ran faster through the dying forest.

Just days ago it had filled with life, and during three long hours the Aves had ravaged the land, their winds destroying everything above ground. I could feel my own Shadow stirring and I knew I was close to death. They never came here, and couldn't have passed the Arch without help. My people had been betrayed by our own protectors, and someone had to pay for it.

The forest was thinning, and soon the Valley's edge came into sight, so close, and yet so far. A single Avi was perched on a corpse, someone unlucky enough to be left behind, like myself.

Only an arm's length away, the soil shifted, catching my foot in an abandoned burrow. I cried out in pain as my ankle snapped, and I hit the ground. So close, but not close enough.

"Young Puella there is no escaping the cleansing," the lone Avi cackled. "You will not escape us, and your Shadow will be His!"

Its horrid croaking was the last I ever heard.

Sorry if it's short, I'm working on expanding it
