Summer had come round faster than she thought. With the huge piles of assignments, lecture notes and exams she had, she didn't even have time to think about her plans.
But now that it was here she found herself lost without it.
What is my life without school? Do I even have one outside of it? She wondered sadly.
Suddenly she spotted a crumpled up piece of paper in the corner of her desk. Picking it up she read it once over again.
Wow this looks amazing, I've always wanted to go abroad! But will I be allowed to go? Who would I even go with? I've never been so far without my family, the longest was that overnight trip to Jeju island. Though that wasn't so bad per say...
Yeah if I can do that then I can definitely go on this trip!
Jiyoon had finally made up her mind that no matter what she will have at least one adventure these holidays. Even if that meant going completely out of her comfort zone and meeting new people who would be complete strangers. Now all she had to do was convince her parents to let her go...
-
The large round table was set with bowls of rice, samgyeopsal and loads of different side dishes. After saying their thanks, the park family were sitting down to eat their dinner together. It was a tradition that Jiyoon enjoyed as they could be together as a family at least once every day and it was a good opportunity to discuss everything together.
"How was work, yeobo?" her mum casually asks her dad.
"Oh you know, same old same old" he answered gruffly, "the new hire is taking a while to get adjusted. What about you?"
"Well you wouldn't believe what Cha Shi Ah had to tell me! Apparently kang mi na has found a boytoy. By that I mean a man almost 7 years younger than her! Can you imagine?"
"Wow people have become really bold these days."
"Hah I'll say, Mr byun down the street just threw a wedding for his son but I heard he ran away with a man!"
As her parents gossiped about some more 'mishaps' that they had happened, Jiyoon had started becoming more and more anxious. She was planning on asking her parents for permission to go on this trekking trip but the opportunity seemed to be slipping further away from her as was her courage.
It was either now or never.
Listening to her parents talk down on all these people was starting to make her feel hot headed. So what if kang mi na is with a guy younger than her?! So what if Mr Byun's son swings the other way?! It was all so, so stupid. Just as her father was about to start another story about how the Kim's let their daughter waste her time trying to become an idol, Jiyoon suddenly exclaimed, "So what?! At least there out there enjoying their lives! At least they're not like me who's miserable and has no purpose in her life.."
Suddenly it just all became too much for her and she found herself in near tears, her whole body just shaking. "I was going to ask you guys if I could go on this trip next month but it doesn't seem like you'll listen!" Jiyoon wildly waved the leaflet around before smashing it on the dining table.
Both her parents looked at each other then at her in shock. "Jiyoon honey - " her mother started, then stopped herself "We didn't mean to demean them, it's just a little neighborhood gossip, it doesn't mean anything..."
"I think you should go to your room, young lady." her father boomed.
Shoulders hunched, face down Jiyoon slowly made her way to her room. Huh well that went well didn't it.
-
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Jiyoon was lying face down on her bed just contemplating how she could be so stupid to have such a hissy fit over nothing. But in reality she was just bottling up her feelings until it consumed her and everything became far too overwhelming.
Knock. Knock.
"Egh, who is it?" she groaned.
"It's your mother and father and we have something very important to discuss with you."
That got her attention, so she scrambled to quickly open the door for them. She finally made eye contact with them and to her surprise her parents didn't seem to be angry, they seemed to be concerned instead.
"Oh honey come here" her mother doted. "We had no idea you were feeling like that."
"I'm sorry mum! I didn't mean to lash out like that at you guys" Jiyoon cried.
Cough. The sound of her father clearing his throat got her attention.
"So your mother and I have had a long chat about what you said" her father directed to the two women " and we've decided to let you go on this trip as long as you promise to study diligently when you get back and keep us updated at all times. Oh and also..."
Jiyoon didn't hear anything after that, she was too shocked by what her father had just said. I can go on the trip?! Are they actually letting me?
Suddenly jumping up and throwing her arms around the two Jiyoon squealed in delight. "OMG thank you thank you so much! You guys are the best parents in the world!"
Now all she had to do was gather the courage to join a bunch of strangers in a foreign country.
What could go wrong?
