¤ Chapter One ¤
* Clara's P.O.V.*
I rested my chin on my palm while staring out the window, tracing the falling raindrops on the glass like the tears tracing my cheeks. I wiped my face with the back of my hand, while I silently sobbed, alone in my room, where no one would hear. Another birthday, another year with my freaking respiratory problems. I've been to the doctor's at least a billion times, but they haven't confirmed it as cancer or just a heart problem. Sometimes I wish it was cancer so that I would just die. It's not like anyone would miss me.
I knew just what to expect today. I wake up, my parents and older brother, Hunter, would bring me breakfast in bed (already happened) then I would find some strange way to occupy myself until lunch. Eventually I'd have to open the present from my parents and read some cards, the worst being the one from my parents, with some cheesy letter about how much I've grown and how proud of me they are. I had a pretty good image of what would happen today on my birthday. After all, I've had sixteen of them.
I wasn't expecting anything interesting to happen until I heard a knock on my bedroom door.
"Clara? Are you in there, honey?" I heard my mom say.
"Yep. Because it's my birthday and of course I have nothing better to do," I replied with a sarcastic tone. She decides it's a good idea to piss me off by opening my door and standing in the doorway, telling me this long winded story about how "I'm a teenager and should get out of the house more" or how "I need to socialize more because she thinks I'll become depressed."
"Well mom, having heart problems doesn't exactly make you the happiest teenage girl. Why did you even come in here anyway?"
"Because I want to see my beautiful daughter!"
She chuckled when she saw me jokingly roll my eyes at her sentence, and she walked in and sat on my bed.
"Your father and I were thinking of taking you out for dinner tonight, since you're always cooped up in this room. We're leaving at 5:45, please be ready by then."
I quickly glanced at the clock hanging on the far wall of my room, squinting to see where the needles pointed, as if that would actually help me see. It said 5:15, giving me half an hour to get ready.

I walked down stairs where my parents were waiting for me, and my dad whistled and said "My, aren't you a beauty," and walked towards me to give me a hug. I couldn't help but smile and blush.
After arriving at the restaurant, my mom whispered something to the lady at the front desk, barely audible, but I managed to hear what she said; "We're with the other girls."
I followed my parents to a booth where I noticed some of my friends; Cassidy, Flora, and Jade were waiting for me.
I shot my mom a "confused yet irritated" look, but she just smiled and made a hand gesture like she was shooing away a fly. I wasn't sure what to make of it, but I forced a smile and sat at the booth.
"Happy Birthday!" they all said, not quite in unison. I just smiled and said "Thanks," while I tucked some loose strands of hair behind my left ear.
After some time, a waiter came to our table.
"Hey guys, how are ya doin'? I'm Niall, and I'll be your waiter for the night. Can I start you off with something to drink?"
