That day was a changing day of my life –in many ways than one. No I didn’t become popular suddenly, nor did everyone started to bully me because I was hogging the most handsome boy of the school. But, I got noticed.
“So what is your name?” a cheerleader looked over me with disdain. I honestly don’t remember her name or face –she wasn’t really that important anyway.
“Martha.” I replied shortly.
She scoffed in disgust. “Whatever. Stay away from Samuel.”
What I do remember was the way she rolled the name ‘Samuel’ in her mouth; making it sound like sam-mow-el. So instinctively, I decided to fix her pronunciation. “It is actually –”
“What are you doing talking to this freak!” another cheerleader shrieked to the one talking to me, cutting me off rudely.
I raised an eyebrow at her tone. I didn’t care she called me a freak –I knew I wasn’t one so there was no need to fight. The thing that annoyed me was how she turned a questioned sentence to an exclamation one. She really needed some English Speech lessons that’s for sure.
“You –” I started again.
“OMG she’s got cooties!” the new cheerleader cried and suddenly both of them ran off screaming their dainty heads off.
I stared behind them in pity. Didn’t they know that only four year old girls got cooties from four year old boys? I shrugged and made my way to the lunch room. I had no time for skanks.
The rest of my day went the same way. People coming to talk, warning me, threatening me, no touching though –apparently I had cooties, and my personal favorite was when geeky girls came to congratulate me for shagging Samuel Kingston and gave me tips to lose some pounds.
The bitter taste on top of my day was none other than Samuel Kingston. He followed me everywhere, but when I angrily told him to go away in the sweetest words possible he chastised me saying: “I just have the same classes as you Martha, so basically I am going my own way.” I can’t believe I never noticed him in my classes before so it was quite a shock and effectively shut me up for the rest of the day.
My happiness was beyond compare when the bell rang indicating school was over, but that all went down the drain when I came out of the school building and stepped into rain. Now, I didn’t really hate or love rain but I wasn’t very particular to walking in it all the way home.
“Need a ride?”
I looked forward to meet the eyes of Samuel. His wet hair was matted to his forehead and turning into a light brown. Without any grumbling, I opened the passenger door to his grey car and scooted in. What? I wasn’t going to pass up a free ride.
“Thank you.” I nodded and let my hair down from the usual bun I kept them in, trying to squeeze out some water. Laughing evilly in my head, I let some water drip onto his leather seats.
“You should keep your hair down more,” Samuel commented. “It looks good.”
“Only when it’s wet,” I retorted.
He looked at me mischievously, a smirk tugging at his lips.
“Shut up.” I glared at him.
He let out a laugh. “I didn’t even say anything!”
“You don’t need to,” I retorted darkly.
Our banter continued till we reached my house where I suddenly realized something.
“Wait, how did you know where my house was?” I asked surprised.
He looked sheepish. “Uh you know… school records.”
“You stalked me?” I shrieked.
“It wasn’t stalking! I never came by your house!” I glared at him menacingly to which he continued. “Alright, alright! I came by once or twice okay?”
I got out, slamming the passenger door loudly behind me. “You snozzcumber!” I kicked the car for greater effect.
He got out panicking. “Hey don’t hit the car! I am sorry, I just wanted to talk to you!”
“You could have talked like a normal person you filthsome little –”
“I tried to! Look –” he was suddenly cut off my voice from my house.
“Martha?” My mom called. “Martha is that you causing such a racket? Come inside dear!”
I shot daggers at Samuel. “I will deal with you tomorrow.” I threatened him and stomped towards the house.
“Good bye!” I heard his cheery reply just before I slammed the front door to my house closed.
My mom poked her head out from the kitchen. “Alright dear?” she asked with an unusually smug face.
I frowned at her. “Yes.”
She came out, rubbing a glass with a cloth. “That was a handsome boy.”
“I didn’t notice,” I replied curtly.
“Why were you screaming?” she asked smirking.
“Why are you so interested?” I asked wary.
“Oh you know,” she glanced at the glass. “Just wondering if I should start planning the wedding.”
I gaped. “Mom!”
“What?” she asked grinning.
I started to stalk upstairs. “I am not talking to you anymore.”
“You know your father and I screamed at each other just before we kissed!” she called.
I shut the door to my room loudly. My heart thumped in my chest and an unfamiliar tingle came to my cheeks. I slapped my hands over to them and felt them warm –and that wasn’t because I was thinking of Samuel’s lips.
