Dear Jaycee,
I've been in here for just one day and I have already come to despise this place. My cell is dark, small, and unkempt. It's like this place has never been cleaned, or even dusted before. I'm frightened of what is yet to come. Luckily, I am allowed my books to read, and then to reread. But what shall I do after that? The future seems to be so unclear and I am nervous. I don't want to be in here for too long. Surely the police are aware that this is all some unfortunate mishap? Surely they know that I did not commit this unforgivable crime and surely they are searching desperately for the true killer, the true murderer? I have never once owned a pocket knife like that. It is implausible that they matched the DNA of the fingerprints to mine. I never touched the murder weapon! I did not even know the poor man that was killed! I deem it completely unfit for me to be in here. I am one hundred percent certain that I am not the killer! You must be sure of this too, for you know that I would never do such a contemptible act. In order for you to be completely aware of the events that took place that day, I will not regret to inform you of exactly what happened. I had awoken at 6:30 in the morning, as I normally had done before. I had started my new diet the day prior to that and had made the decision to start exercising. Since you work night shifts, I deemed that it would make more sense for me to ask Calliope to assist me with my workouts rather than you, which I'm sure that you understand. So after I had gotten ready, I called her and asked whether she would want to run with me that very morning. She agreed, and we went on our workout. However, as the run was coming to an end, we had come across a ditch in the forest. This, my dear, is where we found him. The dead man and the pocket knife. All I wanted to do was check to see if he was alive. I checked for a pulse! That is all! That is all! I would never do such a thing like that. I was only checking for a pulse. Calliope was there with me, was my witness the whole time. She can tell you everything! I promise I did not do it. The police saw me, though, and I was immediately taken down as a suspect. I told them exactly what happened, just as I did just now, yes. They did not believe me. They said that the evidence was immaculate and that all the signs pointed to me! To me! Can you believe it, honey? Me, just poor old me running in the woods with a friend has been accused and tried and now punished for a crime that I didn't even commit! Do not fret, though. I should be out of here in no time. Just you wait, don't you fret. Don't you worry, now. The policemen will soon come to their senses and realize how oblivious they are being to the situation. They will soon be made aware that I am not the person that they are looking for. The true murderer will show up in no time.
Love, Joan
