The next day, I found myself on my way to Hedgewick Lane from school. I was excited for some adventure to pick up my terrible day. Considering I did all my homework in the morning, it hadn’t turned out very well, and my teachers tended to be very strict for some reason. And I couldn’t focus on ANYTHING but Aaron and the fact that vampires existed. Exploring with Aaron was exactly what I needed, and that’s what I did.
When I got to Hedgewick Lane, Aaron was already looking around at stuff. I wasn’t entirely sure what he was doing but I joined in silently. I looked around at the flowers and houses, but after a few moments, I attempted conversation.
“Hi.” Aaron looked up, startled. Had he seriously not realized I was there?
“No, I just wasn’t expecting you to actually speak out loud.” Right, I forgot you could do that. I decided even though we could half-telecommunicate, it was easier to talk out loud.
“What exactly are we looking for?”
“Clues.” He rolled his eyes. “Humans.” I decided to ignore that remark, considering it wasn’t worth the energy to argue the actual level of intellect of the human brain and how unclear he was and therefore how stupid he was being for claiming that he was somehow superior to humans, just because of his fangs. “I heard that.”
“Why don’t you just stop listening in on my thoughts? They’re private!”
“Fine.” He raised his arms defensively. “Just please help me look.” After a few seconds, he added, “and if humans are so amazing, maybe you could tell me what we should be looking for.”
“I dunno,” I said, giving up.
When I got home my mom was mad again, but got over it fairly quickly. And it was a lot easier to do my homework after seeing Aaron again. Because I went so fast, I was done with my homework in just a bit over an hour. I spent a little longer idly looking over my work, but it still only like 5:30, so I sat back and thought about the portal. After a while, I got it. I called up Aaron and I soon as I heard the click, I started talking.
“Evidence.”
“Huh?” Aaron’s voice sounded groggy. I wondered if he was asleep. Do vampires usually sleep during the day? Eh... I didn’t care.
“Evidence, the portal.”
“Evidence of what?”
“Now, look who’s the dumb one. Other stuff coming through, or things connecting the two places.”
“Okay, I’ll look.”
“What about me?” I asked. I figured he meant to say we, but just in case...
“I think I can handle this on my own, thanks.”
“What do you mean! I was the one who thought of this idea!” I was started and I was mad. He was betraying me for no good reason.
“Yeah, but you’re only like 11.”
“12.”
“12, you’re not even a teenager! Vampires can be dangerous and you are not going near them.”
“Take that back.” I was furious. I had done everything for him and now, once he got all the information he needed from me, he was deceiving me.
