I fell asleep that night cradled in Foster's arms, his warmth soothing me. I fell asleep to the sound of his heart beating beneath the skin of his chest. It was the lullaby that finally eased me to sleep when exhaustion pulled me under.
And when I woke, I couldn't help but be happy despite the task of clean up that loomed. I had to bury my father today, along with thousands of soldiers who had fallen to the cause - Mab's or ours.
And though my heart was heavy with sorrow, it was also filled with hope. Hope of a new world that was in our grasps, if only we dare reach for it.
So as I laced up my boots still caked in blood to begin the day was bound to be full of horrors, I smiled.
I smiled because of the sacrifice a father gave to his daughter. I smiled because of a queen of Spring and of Summer that found love in a broken boy with raven hair and golden eyes. I smiled because of friendship, and loyalty, and love.
Foster gripped my hand in his own, his pulse hammering, mirroring mine. "Are you ready?"
I stood on my tiptoes, brushing my lips against his. "As long as you're with me."
