Prologue
The Promise of a forever
“Ok, I’m starting! One, two, three…” The little blond haired boy started counting, one arm on his eyes with his body facing the wall of the bedroom. The cute little girl, after making sure he was not cheating, turned around and ran silently towards her favorite hiding place. She had only fifty seconds to get there and couldn’t wait to be hidden.
She opened the door, climbed the stairs in a hurry and went inside the “winter wardrobe” as they liked to call it: it was the best wardrobe for her, because she could snuggle up in her mother’s fur coat and stay comfy while waiting for Seth to find her. Hide and seek was their favorite game since it was the first game they ever played together, and it made them become best friends. Suddenly, she heard Seth shouting “here I come” and stopped moving to prevent herself from making any sound.
Some footsteps that seemed to climb the stairs made her gasp. She waited until she heard Seth saying softly “I know you’re around here, Kaylie…” The little girl couldn’t help it: she started giggling but stopped rapidly after hearing the steps getting closer. Oh no! He couldn’t find her yet, they had only started and she loved hiding so much! But all too soon, the doors were opened and two arms grabbed her and pulled her out of the wardrobe. She looked up to look into gorgeous blue eyes and smiled up at the little boy before hugging him tightly in her arms. He hugged her back, and she suddenly felt incredibly sad, considering this might be the last time they ever played that game together.
“I don’t want you to go Seth!” She mumbled into his chest. “I don’t want to go either, Kaylie. I’ll miss you too much.” “Then why can’t you stay?” she asked angrily, pouting and crossing her arms in front of her chest. “I can’t decide, Kay! My parents think it’s for the best and I have to tag along, I don’t have a choice, even though I’d rather stay here with you.” “Couldn’t you at least wait after my birthday?” The tears she had tried to contain were now falling down on her cheeks.
She gasped when she felt two arms circling her shoulders. She raised her head slowly, to finally face the gorgeous little boy. Seth had watery eyes and a sad smile on his face. “I hate it when you cry Kaylie” he says softly, “’cause you’re meant to have a smile on your pretty face” She shook her head and murmured “but I can only smile if you smile too, Seth.” His eyes widened a bit with surprise, but the corners of his mouth slowly went up, forming a beautiful grin on his face, automatically followed by a grin of hers.
But their moment was interrupted by a voice that made them quickly come back to reality: “Kaylie! It’s time to say goodbye, because Seth’s parents are here.” Kaylie looked down, overwhelmed by the sadness of seeing her best friend leaving. They both made their way towards the entrance until they saw Maria and Philip, Seth’s parents. Seth grabbed his mom’s hand and looked directly into Kaylie’s eyes. “We will see each other again, I promise.”
They started to walk away, Seth’s parents saying again their goodbyes to Kaylie’s family. Just before they reached their car, Kaylie ran to Seth, hugged him one last time and whispered in his hear “you must promise that when we see each other again, you will stay close forever.” He smiled softly, pushed her away delicately and sat in the car. Kaylie felt the tears falling again and looked down, feeling heartbroken…when she heard “I promise”. With the most beautiful smile on her face, though she still had the marks the tears had made on her face, she turned around and went back inside her house. She was so glad that she would see him again, and she hoped it would be very soon.
