Chapter 4: Keep

I walked upstairs through the empty hallway. Had a tough day at work and could barely see through my eyes. I checked my grandma's room to make sure she was asleep, but she wasn't.

"Hey, why are you awake at," I stopped mid-sentence to check my watch, it's a watch I bought with the 2 dollars I had found under the kitchen table.

"2 am?!" I snapped, didn't even realize I was working for that long.

She turned her body to me and my facial expression softened. She had cried. It may be dark and my eyes were exhausted, but I could see it clearly. Her pain was readable in her eyes, it gave me several thoughts running through my brain.

"I didn't want to sleep before seeing you today, you were so quick to go to work after school, I couldn't even ask how your day was at school," she responded sleepily.

"Let me make some coffee downstairs, we could talk about your day,"

Her smile was brighter than the sunlight of a sunny morning. I couldn't resist.

"Today was special, I met some girl grannie," I respond shyly.

"Oh, love comes young, are you friends with her?"

"Not really, we only had a small conversation today. It's impossible to keep intact with people lately," I said as I looked down, avoiding her gaze.

"Well my precious baby, I have a present for you that could change that," she said, placing a box on the table.

"No, I don't expect any gifts from you," I immediately rejected the present, but it was no use.

"It's Christmas, take it,"

My eyes widened as I opened the pink box. A black thing was inside of it. It was a cell phone, the latest model, the size and shape of an old-fashioned credit card in the days before everything was put on the phones.

"You haven't gotten a phone yet, but here is your first phone, I wanted to give it on your 18th birthday, but I couldn't let this wait,"

"Now you go to school tomorrow and ask her number or I will have to do it for you," she said sternly.
