He stood awkwardly in front of Rue's door, the summer sun beat down on him. His hands shook, even when he tucked them in his pockets. Although he was happy, he was horribly nervous and anxious. He had to give it his all to rid the memories and bad thoughts from his mind as quickly as they came in. Not to say some didn't stay for a long time, though. He was dressed in what was possibly his best, he had even made his hair look nice.
"Calm down!" He instructed himself in his thoughts, "that's what happened last time, you couldn't stay calm and messed everything up, it can't go as bad as last time, you made SURE of it." He raised his trembling hand up to the tall door and feebly knocked, his heart pounding loud enough to hear. He waited for not even a second, and the door swung open. It was Rue, obviously, she was the only one who lived there. Cosmo was just lucky her father hadn't been visiting.
Rue squealed with delight as she scooped Cosmo in her arms, squeezing him to the point of suffocation. She stepped in the house, and with the arm that wasn't squeezing her tiny boyfriend, she shut the door. Her house was reasonably cooler than outside, but to his disappointment, she didn't have the AC as high as he usually did.
"I'm so glad you came to visit me, you look so beautiful today!" She exclaimed, "Also, I'm really sorry if it's hot in here, I just can't stand cold." Cosmo shrugged as she set him down, pretending as if it didn't bother him. Which, in a long sleeve shirt, is a big lie. She smiled down at him, but she looked as if she was trying to remember something. "I'm sorry," she said, "did I forget about something, is there a reason you're all dressed up?"
"No no no, don't worry," He shook his head, "I just came to see if you wanted to maybe go on a walk?" She grinned with excitement and giggled a bit. She nodded violently and, seeming to remember something, dashed into the next room, informing him that she'd be right back. While she was gone, Cosmo glanced over at the endlessly-growing collection of photos that she kept on her walls. Most of them were either him, Francis, or both. It warmed his heart to see how much she cared about him, getting rid of a very small amount of anxiety. Rue appeared back in the room again with a small basket.
"I'm back!!" She exclaimed, rushing in, "I'm so sorry for making you wait, I just figured I might see a really pretty flower and I don't wanna put it in my pockets, cause then it'll get wrecked." Cosmo smiled, assuring her the wait was fine and reached up for her hand. She quickly took it and held it tightly, smiling and giggling with joy. "Where do you want to go?" she asked, "I always pick where we go, maybe you know somewhere nice!" Cosmo knew exactly where he wanted to take her, it was perfect.
"Well," he said, pretending to think, "I think I know a really beautiful place, it's not too far, either." She nodded and they went out the door. Cosmo led her down a beautiful path near a forest. They went into the forest and down a dirt path that was nearly overgrown in weeds since no one usually went down there. As they approached the end of the path, the pond appeared. There was a very small fountain-like waterfall that was like a waterslide for frogs. Trees surrounded the clearing where the pond was, making a natural roof. The water was clear, but frogs, small fish, and small plants resided in it. The grass next to the pond was clean and, surprisingly, not muddy.
"Oh, Cosmo," she whispered in awe, "This is absolutely beautiful, I've never been here, how did you know this was here?" They sat down next to the pool of water and Rue held him close to her. The sound of the water splashing and the birds chirping was calming and perfect. Only small patches of sun came through the leaves of the trees. These dots of sunlight danced on the rippling water and made the grass seem to glow.
"Well, my sister, Susanne, took me here once or twice," he recalled, "Apparently my parents would come down here when they were young, Susanne thought it was beautiful, and I figured you would too." She sighed in happiness and hugged him tighter, grinning big. Cosmo felt at peace next to her, the anxiety from earlier had left him, he forgot about it completely. "I felt like I needed to show you," he whispered.
"I'm so glad you did," She said, happily, "Cosmo, I really am, this is special." He laughed to himself, it really was the perfect time to ask. He wasn't even worried, deep inside, he knew what her answer would be. He gently nudged himself from her grip, she seemed a little confused. He reached into his back pocket for the ring... the ring... it wasn't there. His heart pounded faster, panic started to fill his brain. Rue was obviously confused now. But he realized, it didn't matter. He didn't need a ring, he didn't need money, he didn't even need to be the perfect person. He was already perfect for her, no matter what.
He laughed and shook his head, "I forgot it at home, the ring, I knew I'd forget something." He put his hand to his forehead, "Damn it, my brain can't ever get everything right, can it?" She tilted her head, very confused. He took her hand, looking into her eyes, he felt a smile go across his face like a rainbow after the biggest storm in history.
"Ring?" she asked, "why would you need a ring?" She made a face as if she was doing algebra homework that she missed the lesson for. Suddenly, the realization of what was happening dawned on her, she looked up at him, her face filled with shock. A lot of shock, but a lot of joy. She screamed with excitement and put a hand to her mouth, her eyes began to get watery.
"Rue," he began, "I know I'm not anywhere near perfect, and you deserve more than me, but I think it's pretty clear, you want me and I want you most of all. You're the most wonderful, beautiful, and most kind woman I have ever met and I don't believe there is a better soul in this world." The tears flowed from her eyes, she started sobbing. "Hold on dear," he chuckled, "I haven't finished yet." He cleared his throat and got on one of his knees.
"Will you marry me?"
She screamed and threw her arms around him, nearly tackling him. "Yes, yes, yes, always!," she choked, "You don't even have to ask!" Tears ran down his shoulder and she sobbed with the biggest grin in the world. He wrapped his arms around her and the waterworks came from him as well. He never thought anyone could love him, much less someone like Rue. He was finally totally and completely happy.
