"Fine"

"I'm fine." She broke a little as the all too familiar words rolled off her tongue. They weren't true, are they true for anyone? They're a coping mechanism, the only way she could handle not caring. It seemed that everyone else cared more about her than she did. Too many people cared, but not enough noticed her pain. She hid it all too well. They never recognized her cries for help. They never realized she was endlessly on the verge of a breakdown. Nobody knew her pain. They knew her as the quirky girl who made cheesy jokes and became obsessed with any form of entertainment she turned to, be it a book, tv show, a band, or anything else. They didn't know the darkness behind the mask she wore daily. They didn't know that when she made jokes about wanting to die they weren't just jokes. They didn't know the pain she faced everyday. They didn't know how badly she wanted it to be over. They didn't know her. But she was too afraid to tell them. Terrified of letting them in. Despite not caring about herself, she cared far too much about others. They might not have known, but they were all that was stopping her from ending it all. Boy, would that scare them if they found out, and she was petrified of them finding out. Especially when she heard someone ask "Are you sure?" Crap.
