Darkness! The most prevailing thing he saw as far as his eyes can reach. Just like his Life.
The soft murmur of waves crashing at the sand and rock-bed reminds him that he's at the seashore near Marine-Drive and that there should be a bottomless ocean meeting an endless sky in front of him, but the mid-night sky paints a pitch-black picture with tiny silver dots shinning like an embellishment in it!
Until
A wave decides to rebel and rise higher making itself glimmer and hence visible under the moonlight. Just like Her - A silver lining! His silver lining!
As the night deepens and the cold wind picks up, the surrounding noise begins to die down steadily until only a handful of people are left scattered here and there.
Neil eyed the untouched tiffin box seating next to him over the rock, a couple of feets away from the wave's reach. Just then a familiar soft tinkle of bangles stamped her arrival, along with the arrival of his widest possible smile that was a distant entity a few minutes ago.
"You are late Mrs Khanna!" he stated as Avni made herself comfortable beside him over the uneven surface of the rock, facing the sea.
She looked serene in her off-white saree with silver beaded detailing in it, somewhat similar to the outfit she wore on their wedding day. Her hairs were left loose to dance along the tunes of mild breeze or simply to tempt him to tangle his fingertips inside and play with them. He so wished!
"What made you so sure that I'll come?"
"I just knew it."
"Why do you always choose this place?"
Neil smiled a bit at her question, "Because these sea-waves reminds me of you! A burning rage of fire on the surface enshrouding a profound calmness within the depth. The determination to find the way to shore uncaring of the rock hurdles in the way and not settling until the goal is reached. That's all You Mrs Avni Ayesha Khanna!"
His brief sideways glance caught her downcasted gaze over her lap and if he's not mistaking the colour with the glow from the streetligh, he saw a crimson spread over her cheeks.
"Hmm.. What did you bring in dinner for me?" She clasped her hands together like an excited tot and took a long breath as if she can smell the food through closed tiffin box. Neil couldn't control the puff of laughter that left through his mouth.
He opened the box only to playfully mock Avni's scrunched face on finding the contents to be 'Bhindi' and 'Chappati'
"You still Love Bhindi, don't you?"
"Always!"
Soon A comfortable silence spread around them, save for the roaring of waves and munching of food by Neil.
"So.." she drawled hesitantly only to earn his puzzled frown, "You met that girl Bebe was talking about?"
"Yes! Last week."
"What's her name? How is she like?"
Neil didn't miss the little waver in her voice or the way she was trying to avoid an obvious eye-contact with him. She fiddled with the platinum ring in her finger that had been his first ever gift to her, ofcourse on their Engagement Day.
Those days!!
"She is sweet, a bit immature, childish and kindda dreamer. Her name is Dhara."
"You know Dhara means Earth just like...."
"But She is not 'Avni', will never be! No-one can be you Avni!" he declared in a gruff voice that has just drowned a stream of tears and succeeded in keeping them at bay.
She sighed in defeat. Shoving his shoulder forcefully, she compelled him to turn sideways to face her directly.
Wrapping her fingers around the nape of his neck and her thumbs around his stubbled cheeks ever so tenderly, she said in a heavy voice, "Why are you doing this with yourself, Neil?"
All brakes held loose and those tiny liquid drops found their way down his cheeks to soak the tips of her thumbs. She tugged his face closer and let their foreheads meet. They were home! It was their safe heaven!
"I don't want anything that's not You!" A soft whizz of whisper left his lips and tingled the skin around her nose, while the deep words left their permanent imprint on her heart.
She gently brushed her lips over his parted ones before pressing them together for a brief fraction of second.
"Neil, don't make it harder for me than it already is!" Saying so against his lips, she embraced him in a tight hug as if her existence depended on it.
"Please don't push me away from you."
"I Love You Avni!"
"I always will!"
As he opened his eyes, he found himself to be hit by a sudden gust of cold breeze that teased his senses and blew his curls. His arms were still outstretched by the side of his body.
And at that moment, he certainly knew that his Late Wifey had conveyed her undying love to him through these wind.
That's just enough for him for this lifetime!
"Mukaddar se Shikwe Shikayate bhi kya Kare,
Jab Dil me Ummide hi Kuch na Baki hai!Bin Manzil Ka Qafir bhi Kya Kare,
Iss Janam ke lie toh Uska Ek Ehsaas hi kafi hai"
