When I was only five years old, I knew I wanted to change the world... the question was, How?
Perhaps an author that tells stories with a world that would never truly listen? A lawyer who, in most cases, served for justice through lies? No, I would do none of those things, instead, my plans would be looked down upon by everyone who knew of them.
A marine biologist, something not many people strive to be in this modern society of makeup and photoshop.
In any case, after years of practice and internships with environmentalists, it became clear to me that our world was everything but perfect. Sure, through our digital works it seemed so, but those were all man-made. The real world, the one that we destroyed millennia ago, the one that was untouched by humans... that world barely exists now. Sure, we can imagine it does, and ignore the fact our world is dying slowly, but the fact that our actions harm our world will never be an opinion.
At the age of fourteen, I dreamed to be a pop-star with songs that hit the charts. Then at twenty, my dream was to get a degree. And then, finally, at the age of twenty-six, I dreamed a dream that changed my life forever.
It was a world without society, but even I was not truly there. I walked the veldts of Africa, the Gobi Desert filled with cacti and flowers blooming, I traveled the Arctic cliffs of Russia, the rivers of Europe which flowed with crystal clear waters and jumping salmon, but the most beautiful sights were the oceans.
I stepped onto the shores of Arcachon Bay and looked out into the ocean. It was truly like heaven was reflected in the water. It was clear, with hints of turquoise and cerulean blue on the surface, but through my eyes only could one see all the way to the ocean floor. Blossoming corals, sharks on the hunt for their fish, and jellyfish floating with the currents with no plastic cartridges to harm them.
I could walk on the water as if I was God looking upon his creations in his last day of rest. And, there he was, a beautiful blue whale twirling in the sea of sapphires, but it was the only one. It flipped and his tale warped above the surface causing waves and ripples in the otherwise calm ocean. I couldn't help myself, it was as if I had walked the world and now this was the last thing I wanted to do, to touch him. My fingertips grazed the beautiful skin of silk and just as fast, everything started to spread blackness. That's when I realized I was human, that I was, in my own mind, looking at the world in Death's eyes. A rotten world that needed to change. A future that could be, but shouldn't.
And then, I awoke, in my bed, tears soaking my face...
"Change," I said and I seized the day.
