There willl probably be a part 2 to this due to how complicated and multi-layered the character was. In this part there will be things mosttly from the beggining of the movie and I will not unravel the murder yet. 

Clearly Lucien is presented as a very attractive person, not just look wise but personality wise. He just has something that immidietly captivates you. He is aware of the fact that he has such an appeal which makes him manipulative, taking advantage of whoever gets slightly close to him. His ways making it very hard for the other person to resist. It is later revealed that he is not the one writting the essays, making him incompetent of actual poetry, though he judges Allen in order to make him more vunrable and dependant on him , his goal being to subconsiously have him serve his purposes. In my opinion he showed Allen affection so that he was sure he was in need of him. We will never know how he truly felt if feelings were mutal but, I support that he enjoyed getting the attetion but, he did not enjoy the person. He liked being liked, never really cared about Allen's fellings, that is proven in that scene in the lake where they have their first kiss but as soon as Jake gets up he procides to abandon Allen alone and order him to write an essay he needed since David was not writting for him anymore. A prime example of how manipulative he was. Uncaring as he might be, in the scene where he was leaving and packing up for going to the marine, when goes to confront him and after a small fight leaves crying, Lucien after he left the room cried, something that can be used to contradict the fact that he does not care about Allen. In conclusion I consider him to be a pretentious poet who can not actually write as well as the ones he criticized, he had the ideas and the unconventional thinking but he did not have the will to actually write about the things he talked about. He uses his charm to get things done his way and is well aware of how to use people to his benefit and keep them attached to him. Though he has been through many things that shaped him into the person he is presented as in the movie. The fact that he had to deal with David from such early stages of his life has a lot to do with who he was.
