Am I ready for this?
I asked myself as I looked at the flowing blues in front of me.
I inhaled briefly before letting out the air and putting the mouth piece of the scuba diving outfit in its place. I tested its mechanism and then without further hesitation, dove into the ice cold water.
I welcomed the cold, it was a nice change after days of the sun caressing my skin with its burning rays. After a few moments of getting used to the water's temperature, I chose a direction, and headed off to find what I had come to see; marine wildlife.
I was expecting to see the most exotic variety of colours among the fish and the corals. I had heard so many fascinating stories and I was desperate to see the wonders of the world under the sea.
...
The colours blue and green were common, making up almost a hundred percent of what I had seen until then.
That was, till I felt something brush against me. I looked to the side, and saw a turtle pass by, its shell held the most brilliant shades of green. I marvelled at its beauty, how could mother nature be so creative, it seems like it took her centuries to create a single turtle.
A sudden movement on my right shook me out of my thoughts.
As my eye sight focused, I realised it had been a large ray using its wing-like fins to glide through the water.
That's when I noticed that the water became even colder, but that was not all. I found myself surrounded by coral reef.
However, these were not colourful, instead I was met with a large area of sickly coloured marine bushes.
They were littered with a diversity of plastic bottles, straws, plastic bags and I even noticed something that seemed to be a car tire.
Plastics were floating densely above my head, throwing a shadow over the rows of water plants, bleaching them out and sickening them.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I had heard about the plastic soup and its effects, but I had never imagined it being this destructive.
My tears blurred my vision, this was not what I was expecting see on my journey, this sea of white, grey and brown couldn't possibly be the exotic coral reefs I was searching for.
Right?
Life was nowhere to be found, the place was deserted, the complete opposite of how I had imagined it a few hours before.
Had I been ready for this?
The answer was no, not for this.
