After spending the night at Julian's and riding with him to school, I could use a few minutes without my precious lover.
Walking through the hallways and hearing the girls talk about prom, how they're going to be hanging with their besties only made me feel worse. This was something Alyssa and I had been planning for years, since middle school.
I knew there was one person that felt the pain as much as I did. Or at least nearly. So I buy two chicken sandwiches, two chocolate milkshakes and head to the art room. When I see him, I smile to myself.
" This seat taken?" I ask.
He turns around slowly, he smiles but his eyes don't meet it, "Yeah, by you. Sit, got the usual?"
"You know it, Alex."
Alex Selon, Alyssa's boyfriend or ex-boyfriend. Alyssa and Alex were the two Hispanic peas in a pod. Alex was Alyssa's type: tall, Mexican, curly hair and the biggest heart ever. He hasn't been coping well with this, but he makes it seem like he is. He knows that I know he's not okay.
Slurping down the milkshake, he says, " Lys loved this. Ever since I met her in middle school, all she wanted me to buy her was a chocolate milkshake. The way her eyes lit up when I bought her one. How tiny she was. And it's crazy but that one time we thought she was pregnant, I was excited."
" I know, she was freaking out and you wanted to calm her down." I laugh.
" Her long brown hair, golden brown eyes, her voice. Man, I don't care, I was ready to give her kids. I was ready to marry her."
"Lyssa always came to me, saying that you were the one. Sometimes I got annoyed. How could she not see the dumbness in you?"
" Shutup Bren, you just trippin cause I stole your best friend." We both laugh until there is a comfortable silence between us.
" I didn't think for one second that she would just... just end her life that way. Because it just doesn't seem like her. At all. It feels like just yesterday we were talking about getting matching outfits for prom. Running for king and queen. Going to the same college, all three of us. Well, four cause Julian but... we've been the holy trinity since middle school." Alex exclaims, on the verge of tears.
I pull him in for a hug as I begin to let go, " No one would've ever thought. And I still don't think she did this. But, we're gonna get through this Alex. And if you need to back out of this, and take a breather, it's okay. No matter what Alex, I'm here for you."
"Bren." He looks up at me as I'm now standing. Then my alarm goes off and I notice it is 11:55 p.m.
" I have to go meet up with Connorchles to talk more about Lys. Text me." I kiss him on the forehead.
" So long as Julian doesn't reply this time."
"I'll try to reply before he gets my phone!" I yell running out of the room.
I turn the corner, nearly bumping into some people as I finally reach the library. I meet Connor in a cubicle. He's so focused on writing but he notices when I come in.
" Brenly, hello. Were you running?" he asks.
" Oh, you know me, hate to be late to anything." I answer, hunched over.
"You look...stunning as usual. Even in the simplest white t-shirt and shorts, eyes-"
I cut him off, "I have a boyfriend, sir, just remember that."
"Right, my bad. Anywho, I just want to know what Alyssa meant to you. I'm not limiting what you say. You can be as detailed as you want." Connor tells me, studying my face.
My eyes start to water as I begin to speak, " Alyssa Necia has been my best friend since 6th grade. I'd give anything to have her back here with me. I have no sisters or brothers so she was all I had. Not to mention she was gorgeous and had the prettiest smile you'd ever seen. When I was mad at the world, she'd cheer me up with her smile. Lys was everyone's sunshine. Mine, Julian 's, her boyfriend Alex, even our principal. She was happy. And it doesn't make any sense why she'd commit suicide out of the blue."
"Sometimes people seem happy when they're really not."
"Not Alyssa, something else has happened to her and I'm gonna be the one to figure it out." I grab my bag and Connor grabs my hand before I can leave.
" Sometimes not knowing is best for you. And so is letting go."
" Yeah, well I'm not letting go until I know the truth about Alyssa."
