Given Erin's traumatizing experience, his mother felt that she owed it to him to let him do as he wanted. Around the time of high school, Erin began experimenting with drugs, and sleeping with girls. It was sad, really. His mother hated to see it, but she did nothing about it.
When Erin was at the age of eighteen, his ex girlfriend announced that she was pregnant. Her name was Stacey. Stacey was completely insane. Money hungry and in no way fit to be a mother, but nine months later came a baby boy, Dale. Erin refused to marry Stacey, he couldn't bear the thought of it. Instead, he married a woman named Christianne.
When Stacey found out that Erin had married someone else, she was infuriated. She began to stalk Erin and his wife. She tried to run down Erin with her car, she ran after him with knives, and when she was unsuccessful, she decided to get to Erin through Christianne.
Stacey got a job at the same office as Christianne and she would constantly glare at her and make threats. Eventually Erin and Christianne had enough of Stacey's games and moved to another state, leaving Dale in the hands of Stacey.
Surprisingly enough, Stacey managed to keep her sanity while caring for her baby. It was when Dale turned two that she decided to let her friend move in and take care of him. That's when Stacey started going out every night, getting drunk, doing drugs, bringing home a difference man every night.
That's the household Dale grew up in. Dale didn't know his father even existed. Stacey told him that Erin had died, trying to spare herself embarassment.
Little did he know that Erin was alive and well, happy with his own family. Dale had also been forgotten.
