Prologue
My frantic breaths and erratic heart was making his instructions hard to follow. The beat of my heart drumming in my ears was deafening and I'm sure even in this deserted classroom, hopefully far from the ...commotion someone would hear me. Crouched in the corner of the room under a wooden desk my eyes were blurring with threatening tears. I just wanted to go home; somewhere under any normal circumstances I would hate even the thought of that place. But the alluring scent of lavender which my Mum would fill the house with; freshly cut from the garden was upsetting me emotionally. I just wanted to be safe. A sob escaped my pursed lips and my muscles clenched. He had told me to be silent. If I do it I won't attract any attention to my classmates. Bang. I froze, holding my breath and not daring to even blink. The noise had come from outside the door which was diagonal from the desk I was crouched under. I had a perfect view of it, which meant if someone opened it the first thing they would see would be me. I silently cursed myself for being so stupid. When I had chosen my spot I was too focused on the windows, how easily someone could have seen me. The left wall was lined with windows so I had chosen to crouch under one of the desks placed up against them obscuring me from view. But that darn door, not only did it not lock without a key, it was made of wood. My arms were now laced with goose bumps, but it wasn't the cold that had brought them on, it was the fear. A striking cold pain that had shot through my veins, a sickening feeling of dread. Then the foulest of smells filled my nostrils and I coughed madly the smell choking me. Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang. My hand gripped my neck as my air supply ran out and I gasped trying to inhale another breath. With cheeks stained of tears I wobbled out from under the desk trying to escape the odor. Now out from under the desk I was no longer worried about getting caught by them, trying to breath was occupying my starving brain. Collapsing onto my stomach my head now laid to the side still trying to draw in a breath. My heavy limbs felt like jelly and no longer could I move them, my drooping eyes now spotting with grey dots. But something washed away the feeling of death and I was numb, content, it was delightful this new thing was. I tried to get my lips to form a smile at this new found feeling but I couldn't find them, they were lost somewhere in this... whatever this was. Bang. My body relaxed under the warmth letting it soak up the light and no longer did I need to breathe. No longer did my heart need to beat...and sunshine was gone. Someone was hauling me to my feet talking in a foreign language at the haze floating over my head. They gripped my waist and dragged me away from it and the source of the smell. I had not noticed it earlier. I slowly looked over my shoulder only to see the haze as I called it sink to the floor and disappear. Then I sucked in a much needed breath, only to start chocking on my own saliva. I looked at the arm tightly gripping my waist so much so it hurt and followed it up to a head. It was him. He had said that he would come for me.
