They don't turn into a real wolf because they aren't wolfs, they're werewolfs. In the last chapter you saw a picture of a werewolf from a TV show. That's how the guys also turn.

They get extra - sharp teeth - yellow or red eyes - sharp nails
What they have also when they're not turned - extra hearing - extra smell - better vision - speed - strength - healing - can take away someone else's pain
In this case the guys are in a pack (a group of werewolfs with one leader) Their leader is called an Alpha The others are Betas
An Alpha has the extra things a werewolf has but even more powerful. A Beta is most likely been bitten by the alpha of their pack but that isnt always the case..

You have werewolfs turned by Alphas ---> Edwin, Zion
You have alphas that aren't alphas anymore ---> Austin
You have alphas that turned into an Alpha by killing another Alpha ---> Nick
When you take a picture of a werewolf in human shape the eyes while light up. They can't get drunk, because of the healing When it's a full moon, they're abilities get even more powerful and some might get aggressive.
Weakness
Wolfsbane --> weakens Mountain ash --> forms an invisible barrier so they can't come in.
Alpha
- the alpha only can turn humans into werewolfs. - Wounds made by an alpha don't heal as fast as others - have a mental control over their betas, that's why roaring works when they dont listen.
