A Conversation

Mana walked down the to GeGeGe Forest around noon. She planned on visiting with Kitaro. She hoped she wasn't too early, as she knew the yokai boy and his father typically sleep in very late (and are up very late into the night too).

As she approached the treehouse her yokai friend lived in, she tightly clutched the handle of a basket of food she had brought to share with her friend. It was mainly sweets that she had brought, but she also brought some onigiri, bread rolls and dried squid, as she knew Kitaro liked bread rolls and pretty much all seafood from a time earler when they had talked about what foods they liked.

As she entered the treehouse, she found Kitaro sitting at the table pouring water into a bowl for his dad to bathe. "Hey, Kitaro! I brought lunch." she exclaimed as she took off her shoes at the door.

"Hey, Mana. I was actually hoping you'd visit today. There's something that I want to tell you."

Mana noticed his serious tone, and wondered what it was about. She sat down next to him with her basket.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing. It's just that there's something I thought I should tell you."

Kitaro paused for a second, trying to find the words for what he wanted to say. "I... I wasn't always a boy. I just thought I should tell you that."

"You mean, like, transgender?" Mana asked, slightly shocked by what he said. "Yeah. I just thought I should tell you because you're a close friend. Please don't think of me any different." Kitaro avoided eye contact while waiting for her response.

Mana embraced him in a hug. "Why cares who or what you used to be or what parts you have?" Kitaro's eyes teared up as he heard her words. "But not everyone thinks that way, though." Mana thought for a second on what to say. "If they think any different of you, they're not worth your time. And you can't forget that there are people who feel this way and will accept you. Thank you trusting me with this."

Mana opened up her basket to get a napkin to wipe away Kitaro's tears and offer him some food. "Who else knows?" she asked as she wiped away his tears. "Just you, To-san, Sunakake-Babaa, Konaki-Jijii, Ittan-Momen, and Nezumi."

Mana placed the food from her basket on the table, and attempted to feed Kitaro one of the onigiri after lightly poking him on the ribs and telling him that he needs to eat or else he'll become a skeleton.

The two talked, laughed, ate their lunch, and enjoyed each other's company for the rest of the visit.
