Diana sat upright on her bed, tapping her fingers impatiently on her nightstand.
Outside of her window, she watched a young stable hand work with a horse near the royal barn. She sighed. He was cute. But she was betrothed to prince Owen. That had been determined from her birth. Diana! She scolded herself. He is your Prince! Get your head out of the clouds! Even with her conflicting thoughts running through her head, she just couldn't tear her eyes away from the you'd stable boy. His dark brown hair fell in front of his shockingly blue eyes. Yes, even from this distance, she could see them. Well, she could imagine them. This wasn't the first time she has fantasized about him. And, quite often, he would catch her staring at him. She would blush, but wouldn't look away until he flashed her a smile, showing off his perfect teeth. He didn't seem to know or care about she and Owen. Nobody did anymore. They were merely 16, with 2 years until their marriage. Diana sighed and wondered what she would do with herself until she was legally old enough to be her own person. There is no point in wondering. She thought to herself. Your life will just be sold to Owen. Diana shuddered at the thought of being controlled her entire life. Her mind was snatched from her troubled thoughts as she heard a tap at the door. She straitened herself and regained her composure.
"Who is it?" She asked, no emotion showing through her well masked voice. She was used to hiding everything. Its not like anyone would care if she spoke her mind about anything. So she kept a monotone, plain voice for the majority of her life, not wanting to risk revealing her true feelings about anything.
"It is Cossette, my lady,"
At the sound of the older woman's name she relaxed and walked over to her locked door. They key was in the lock. Diana turned it to reveal her favorite servant. She curtsied quickly and the princess motioned for her to come into her room. She examined Diana's outfit carefully and slowly raised an eyebrow.
"Is something wrong?" The princess asked.
"Do you plan on wearing that to breakfast?" Cossette inquired.
Diana glanced at the sun. It hung high in the sky.
"Oh my," she exclaimed. "I forgot about breakfast!" Turning quickly, she raced to her large closet and pulled on a simple white dress. It was better than the skimpy nightgown she had been wearing. Rushing out the door, she almost forgot her shoes.
"My lady! Your shoes!" Cossette shouted called as the princess raced away. The young woman turned suddenly, her long, golden hair whipping violently as she looked at Cossette.
"Oh my!"
Diana ran back and grabbed a pair of white flats from her servant.
"Are you okay, my lady?" The concern was evident in Cossette's voice.
"I just have a lot on my mind," The princess replied. With that she took off for the main hall where breakfast was being held.
