No. 2 Fruits Basket
Hello everyone, welcome to Ren-Chan's wonderful book for otakus. Today we're going to be talking about the very first manga I have read, the manga that officially introduced me into the manga world. And that is...Fruits Basket!!
I still remember the day I first picked up this manga in my middle school's manga section, and I didn't understand shit.
Lol. I never realized I had to read from left to right, so I started from right to left like any normal book, and was confused by the whole thing.
It took some time, but by the time I finished the 1st volume, I finally understood what the story was about, and was fascinated by the plot. So I'm just gonna come out and say it, I ship Tohru and Yuki.
Like hardcore.
I never liked Kyo in any way. But he's such a tsundere adorable kitty.
Ya, so? Yuki on the other hand, is so precious. He suffered a lot as a kid solely because he was a rat. I don't understand why Tohru choose Kyo over Yuki. Are innocent girls just attracted to bad boys?
And yes, I do love Tohru as a character. Many people say she's weak, but I don't think so. She is able to survive Kyo's hideous transformation of a monster, and her words genuinely bring strength to the other Sohma members, and basically heals them with her kindness like a mother. As you read the story, every Sohma member who suffers under the curse, found Tohru's words reassuring. The type of girl who speaks the truth, yet is also able to show comfort. You can tell how much she attracts everyone around her, and how much everyone cherishes her.
Every time I think about their past, it just makes me want to cry~~ T.T
And you know how a good story can make you experience a wide range of emotions? That's Fruits Basket. At first it seems like a typical romantic comedy, with a hint of fantasy (cause you to know, the humans are literally transforming into animals by coming into contact with the opposite sex), but as the story goes on in the manga, the plot gets dark as Tohru learns more about the Sohma family and the curse.
Before I forget, the story of Fruits Basket is basically about a young girl who recently lost her mother in a car crash. Due to some circumstances, she has no choice but to settle in a tent within the woods as her shelter for the time being, without knowing that the territory actually belongs to the Sohma residence. After the Sohma family invited her to live inside their home, Tohru accidentally discovered their biggest secret: which is they will transform into their zodiac animal when hugged by someone of the opposite gender.
Tohru, being a kind soul she is, is totally unaffected by the situation, accepts them as normal friends (AUH I LOVE TOHRU).
And just so you know, Tohru has great friends. They may seem a bit odd, a trio with a delinquent, psychic, and innocent soul? But please, they always got each other's backs.
Since the anime ended with 24 episodes, I continued on with the manga. And I can tell you I don't like this new girl very much. Her name is Machi, the new student council member when Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru turns 3rd year. I couldn't feel the connection between her and Yuki, sometimes I feel like she was just thrown in to make a random couple out of Yuki, since he isn't getting Tohru.
That ending irritated me a lot.
But whatever, as long as Yuki is happy.
Guys, please give this manga a try, or anime, it doesn't matter. If you're reading the manga towards the end though, prepare some tissues, because it's about to be a rollercoaster of emotions. Just a warning for ya.
And until next time! ^.^
