"Karma"
I tap my fingers against the table while sipping my 2nd order of coffee. Sabihin na ng lahat na sobra na ako sa caffeine sa katawan but it's a habit of mine ever since I ever know coffee. Every second, my eyes turn to roam around the coffee shop, flitting from one face to another. Looking for that one face that I know so much. I sighed for the nth time thinking that my time was wasted for such a person. That jerk.
The chime on the glass door rang but I kept my eyes on the cup of coffee in front of me. After this cup I'm out. I'm not going to wait for him any longer. I raise my eyes to look at the counter but someone blocks my view.
"Kanina ka pa dito?" I look up and found Levi's serious face looking down on me. Sumimangot ako bago nilamukos ang table napkin at inihagis sa mukha nya.
The table napkin falls awkwardly back to the table and Levi sat down poker faced in front of me. "What was that for?" He asked. I leaned back and cross my arms in front of my chest and look back at him giving him my disappointed look. Nagtataka ako kung bakit sa tuwing may mga babaeng tumitingin sa kanya ay di nila kayang tapatan ang titig nya. He's only a jerk.
"Anong oras na?" I asked. He nonchalantly look at his wristwatch.
"4:30 p.m."
I gritted my teeth at his answer. Pumikit ako at bumilang ng sampu bago huminga ng malalim at muling tumingin sa kanya. Ngumiti ako bago nagsalita. "Di ba ikaw ang nag-set ng meeting na 'to? Bakit ikaw pa ang late? As in late na late?"
He looked at me and gave-off his dumbfounded look. Nagkibit-balikat ito at tumayo para pumunta sa counter. I took my phone from my bag and decided to send my best friend a message.
'I-order mo rin ako. Kahit na ano.'
Lumingon ako kay Levi at sumimangot ng makitang nakatingin sya sa akin habang hawak-hawak ang phone nya.
I always try to look at Levi. I'm always trying to figure out why he is considered as a Lady Killer by most of the girls that I know. Kaya wala akong matinong babaeng kaibigan. It's always about Levi whenever those girls are trying to hit a conversation with me. Lagi na lang si Levi. Always Levi.
"What's with me?" Sandali akong nagulat sa biglang pag-litaw ni Levi sa harapan ko. I didn't notice that I'm talking loudly. He's holding a tray with two plates of sliced cake and two cups of frappe.
He seated himself before me bago nya inilagay sa harapan ko ang na-order nya.
"What's with 'Always Levi?' " I wasn't planning on answering his question but he was looking straight at my face intent on fishing an answer for his question.
Sumimangot ako at umirap sa kanya. He answered me with an annoyed look. Ayaw nya talaga na umiirap ako dahil hindi naman daw ako marunong at nagmumukha lang daw akong tanga.
"Iniisip ko lang na wala akong babaeng kaibigan dahil sayo. Whenever some girl is trying to talk to me it's always about you. Always Levi." Sumimangot ako. So disappointed with my situation.
Lalong sumimangot si Levi sa sinabi ko. "I'M YOUR BEST FRIEND. You're not just contented with that fact." Levi smugly look at me.
He's really disappointing.
"But you're not a girl, Levi! I can't talk about girl things with you."
Tinitigan nya ako ng mabuti bago nya isinubo ang pagkain nya. "I was there all throughout your many firsts'. First period. First underarm hair. First dance. First day of high school. First day of college. And even first kiss. I. AM. YOUR. FIRST KISS."
He showed me his stupid smug smile na laging kinababaliwan ng lahat ng babaeng nakakakita sa kanya.
Sumimangot ako sa sinabi nya.
"That's not a kiss you fool! It was a smack. And you're my bestfriend. You're not some guy that I can flirt with." I said as a matter factly.
Ngumisi sya sa sagot ko sa kanya. Jerk Levi!
"Bakit mo ba ako pinapunta dito? Ano bang agenda nating dalawa?" I asked while scanning my super jerk best friend. This should be something that will catch my interest.
"It's not something important. I just want to hang-out with my best girl. What's wrong with that?" Direkta na sagot nya sa akin.
I only smile. Alam ko na to eh!
"Nakipagbreak ka na ano? You're such a fucking jerk, Levi. Pang-ilan na yan sa mahabang listahan ng babaeng pinaasa mo?"
"20? 30? I lost count." Mayabang nyang sagot sa akin.
Umiling ako habang seryosong nakatingin sa kanya bago tinusok ang kapirasong putol ng cake sa harap ko.
This has been in my head for so many years. And I think he really needs to hear this from me and not from anyone else.
"Levi, you have to stop this little game of yours. Karma is a terrible bitch. I don't want to hear that one of this days you'll meet your karma. Mas mahirap yon." I dramatically said. After that, I sipped from my frappe patting the shoulder of my inner smart self for saying those words of wisdom.
I was busy smiling at myself before I notice Levi smiling at me.
"What? Don't tell me you don't believe me?" Asar kong tanong sa kanya.
Umiling sya sa tanong ko bago nangalumbaba kagaya ni Ninoy Aquino sa lumang five-hundred pesos habang naka-ngisi sa akin.
"I'm not saying this... but Leigh... I've already met my karma."
