I wake up in the middle of the night. I slowly open my eyes and I notice it’s only midnight.

My bare feet are cold, and when I am about to stand up to get a blanket I hear someone tapping at the door. It starts out soft and slow and then changes into a steady beat, beat, beat as though a giant’s heart is nudging the door.

I remain quiet, trying not to breathe, until it stops. Then I stand up, put a blanket on my bed and go to the door. I put my hand on the door knob and dare to slowly, quietly open the door. Then I feel something hitting my head.

I scream.

The door shuts open and I see someone standing in front of me. All I can see is the human figure and that he is holding something with both of his hands. A knife.

I try to concentrate to be able to see the human’s face: it’s a man. He has big, blue lips and his face is pale as if he was dead. His eyes are red and he has blood in his chin.

“Isabelle!” I shout, hoping she will wake up. And she does: she quickly sits down in bed and turn on the light. She seems a little confused when she sees the man, but then she sees his face and screams too.

“What’s happening?!” I demand to know. I see Isabelle opens her mouth to say something but then turn around and notice the man is racing to get to where I am, and he is pointing me with the knife. I scream as loud as I can wishing someone will hear me but nobody does. Everyone’s asleep.

“Barbara!” Isabelle stands up, but she can’t do anything about it. The man is about to stab me. But I can do something, so I move to the right and although I hit my head with Isabelle’s bed I am safe from the man’s knife –for now.

I notice blood coming out of my forehead, so I put my hand on it and when I see my fingers they’re full of blood. My head starts hurting and everything is moving, but then the man falls down right beside me so I stand up as quickly as I can and race to where Isabelle is, standing up with her eyes wide opened, staring at the man. Her mouth is opened like if she was about to scream but no sound escapes from her mouth.

“He is sick”, Isabelle says, shocked. “He’s contaminated.”

But the man isn’t asleep, so he stands up and starts walking to where we stand. I try to run but my muscles won’t respond to my brain ordering them to motherfucking move, so I do the only thing I can think of: scream.

And when the man is about to stab our heads I react: I make myself fall to the floor and I take Isabelle’s hand so she will fall too, and she does. The man seems confused and starts looking for us, so I take advantage of it and start to crawl hoping to get to the door before the man finds us.  Isabelle follows me.

In my way to the door I think that maybe contaminated people are like zombies: dumb but lethal.

And we get to the door just when the man is clever enough to turn around and screams feeling impotent, but when he starts running to get us it’s too late: I lock the door then slam it, hoping he is actually that dumb to not think about opening it.

And then we both start screaming for help because we know he is dumb but he will eventually find a way out and try to chase us or someone else. And Virus 3028 is only starting.

“HELP! PLEASE HELP US!” Isabelle yells. “A sick man wants to kill us!”

“Andrew!” I shout and my voice trembles. “Colonel Williams! James! SOMEONE?”

And someone actually opens a door in front of us. I smile because I know we are going to be saved but my smile vanishes when I see he’s not holding a knife but a gun. He is sick too, and he isn’t a normal soldier: he’s Lieutenant Colonel James.

“Ah!”

Isabelle starts running through the corridor trying to escape James but he pulls the trigger. I scream my lungs out but luckily she got shot in her foot. She will survive… if she can run.

James runs over to her and she starts walking on crutches trying to escape but he is about to get to her. That’s when I decide it’s time for me to do something: I am not sick so I can run faster than James. Plus he has no bullets left, because he holds Isabelle’s arm and points to her head with the gun, and when she closes her eyes and he pulls the trigger nothing comes out of it, no bullet. Isabelle opens her eyes and stares at James, astonished.

“Gosh!” She cries. “Oh, my gosh!”

But I am almost there too, so I jump and force James to leave Isabelle alone. He is lying down on the floor and stares at me with his red eyes. He is about to hit me in the face when Isabelle throws something at him, something that gets him in the eye.

A deep scream comes out of his throat and I see his eye is bleeding. He murmurs something and then, before I realise it, he hits me. I am about to close my eyes when I hear Andrew’s voice: “What’s happening in here? James…?”

“I’m going to kill you, I don’t care if you’re…!” Lieutenant Colonel James screams, but I don’t hear the rest of the sentence. His voice doesn’t sound like his voice anymore, it’s become deeper and sounds scratchy.

Andrew tries to calm James down but it doesn’t work, and then I hear the sound of a gun.

“Sorry, man…”

Even though I know James’s gun didn’t have bullets left, I close my eyes wishing he didn’t shoot me.
