Chapter2 – Dormitory 12

-Ella-

My name is Ella.

It won’t leave my mind, that and the boy… Jake.

As we are lead towards the exit we branch off into our dorm groups, I follow another girl towards the dormitory 12 sign where a guy stands. He can’t be much older than us newbies, possibly 18? 19? About 5, 9’ blond hair, and a body that seems to skeletal for his frame. He, as everybody else is, dressed in the white uniform

“Hi, I’m Michael, the eldest member of dorm 12 which means I gotta look after you lot!”

He gave us both a smile whilst handing us both a crisp white piece of paper.

“These are the rules, memorise them tonight as tomorrow you will be tested on them tomorrow were you will also receive your P.A.D.S., so come on its time to introduce you to the dorm”

He gave us another warm smile then gestured for us to follow him out of the white brick building. As we exit I notice that the only two patches of colour are the blue sky and the trees. Every building, car, pavement and door is a uniform white. There is no distinct colours.

We carry on walking in a steady line until we reach a block of about 20 buildings. All of which are white once again. They are all exactly the same with four floors which is shown by the window at each floor. The only difference between the buildings are the roman numerals printed on the doors in a dark shade of grey.

“Here we are campers!” Michael exclaims as we reach a door with the letters XII on it, number 12. “Well, as there are only 3 of us in the dorm now you can choose any of the 3 remaining rooms, mine is on the first floor, dinners at 7pm and as im the chef if your late everybody else gets 2nds!”

He opened the door and stood aside so we could walk in. There is a long corridor with one room coming off towards the left and the spiral staircase at the end, predictably everything is white. I walk towards the stairs and begin climbing them, 1, 2 and now level 3. Level three, I decide, is my bedroom. The whole floor is the bedroom with a small white door towards the right which I presume is the bathroom. There is a large iron single bed against the far wall and a small dresser beside it. I walk towards the in wall wardrobe, and slowly slide the door open. Inside there is another pair of the overalls, and another cardigan. A pair of white lase up trainers sit side by side on the otherwise empty shoe rack. The paper hits the floor as I scramble to put them on.

A laugh emerges through my lips as I realise I have no idea how to tie my lases. So the lases unavertable go untied. Suddenly the door opens, and the other girl stands in the door way.

“Oh, Hi… um, I’m Nat” she fumbles, wringing her fingers. Her eyes flick to my feet and back up to my head, “Do you... um… want some help with them.”

Nat’s hand gestures towards my untied shoes.

“Well,” I sigh, “as I have no idea how to tie a measly pair of shoes at 16years of age… I think I do need some help! So yes please Nat!”

As she bends down to help I catch her gaze, after a couple of seconds sitting in front of one another unmoving I begin giggling again.

“You don’t know how to tie lases either do you?” I ask.

Nat gives me a shy smile whilst shaking her head “nope… I thought I did, but I don’t! I feel so stupid sorry… I’ll just go,” she stutters as her body begins to make its way towards the door.

My hand grabs her wrist as she turns to leave, “stay, and let’s get to know each other… even though we don’t know a lot about ourselves”

She seems torn but sits infront of me again on the floor, “So… what’s your favourite colour?”

--

We talk for what seems like hours, until Michaels voice echoes through the room.

“Dinners ready!”
