On Saturday, August 11 2007 Sophie Lancaster and Robert Matlby were returning home together when a gang of teenagers viciously and savagely attacked them, kicking them in the head multiple times until they lost consciousness. Sophie was on her knees cradling the unconscious body of her boyfriend when the gang turned their attention to her. A witness described them, 'Kicking her in the head, jumping up and down on her head.' After they left them unconscious and bleeding in the park, the leader bragged to people he met, 'There's two nearly dead moshers in the park, you wanna se them, they're a right mess.' They had no remorse or mercy for the innocent life they took. The worst part, they attacked them not for anything they'd said or done, just because of the way they looked.
Robert and Sophie were taken to hospital, each in a coma, Robert with bleeding in the brain. He recovered, with slight brain damage. Sophie didn't. Her life support was turned off 14 days later after the doctors told her family she wouldn't wake up. Later, her family said, 'We were proud to know our daughter, she was funny, kind, loving and brave. She was a beautiful girl with a social conscience and values which made her a joy to know. Not being able to see her blossom into her full potential or even to see her smile again is a tragedy beyond words.' When the police and ambulance got there they couldn't tell which of the lifeless bodies were female and which was male, due to the severity of their wounds.
Sophie's mother, Sylvia, set up a charity known as the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. The message and aim of this charity is to stamp out prejudice intolerance and hate everywhere. S.O.P.H.I.E.. You can help by following the external link on the side and donating, buying merchandise, or organising a fundraising event. Sophie and Rob had talked about getting married, talked about their lives together.
Now that can never happen.
