She stopped coming back for a while. Maybe I was a little rough on her? I don’t know. I guess it’s just weird when you see one person everyday and you one thing and they’re gone and it just feels like your fault.
But when silly me thought everything was crumbling, another wonderful thing happened in that moment.
She walked in again.
A smile broke out onto my face as I watched her walk further into the back of the store. Her hair and clothes sopping wet from the rain. Poor girl needs an umbrella or something.
I walked to the back of the store and followed her. Soon enough she crouched down on the floor and opened up that book.
I always wondered what she did in that book.
“Hey,” I said. “What do you have there?”
Hoping I was starting a nice conversation. Too wrong.
“None of your damn business,” she replied. “I should report you for harassing your customers.”
Before I could even think of a response, she quickly got up and ran to the other side of the store, leaving me to feel like the bad guy once again.
I knew she was cold, but at that moment she was a fucking bitch
