ODELIA sits in a director-style chair on a bare stage, facing away from the crowd. Suddenly, the stage explodes with activity. Stage hands set up props and scenes, while actors, including KARI, begin stretching, dressing, practicing lines, ECT. Lighting and sound technicians head off stage and begin tweaking the effects. If an orchestra is present, they may tune their instruments. Excluding Odelia and the ensemble ACTORS, all these people are actual crew members.
Once everyone is settled and quiet, MARK comes up behind ODELIA.
MARK:
Come on now, up you go.
He helps her out of the chair, she gets dizzy.
ODELIA:
Really Mark, you don’t have to yank me up so roughly.
MARK:
The only thing treating you roughly is that half-empty flask on your waist. What is it? 10:55? Wow that must be a new personal record for you.
ODELIA:
Muttering
Not even close… But you do understand why I need a bit of a helper with that fresh-faced, mediocre, show-pony around, prancing about with her “AMAZING TALENT”. Bah! I’ll shove that talent right up her…
KARI:
Calling from across the stage.
Odelia!
ODELIA:
Kari, dear, you seem… jolly.
Raising her voice for everyone to hear.
