I kept my head low, scouting out the hallways, looking for room 2. I had science first with Mr. Helium. I jumped a little as I watched a student shove another against the locker.
“I just know that’s gonna be me” I whispered to myself.
Then I turned the corner and saw a large man several feet taller than myself. There was a giant 2 over the classroom door.
“This is me” I thought. I pushed open the door and saw a teacher pleasantly seated at his desk, hands folded, looking at the students trickling in. The teacher stood up. He was surprisingly tall, about six feet. He had a deep voice that was clear as he spoke.
“Hello, students. Welcome to your first day at Reagle High. The school that’s so royal, no one dares come.” The students snickered a little at his joke. “Right. Ok, now that you know me, open your books to page 394, you have fifty homework assignments due tomorrow, test is Friday!”
The class looked shell shocked. You know when they look like what the h-e-double hockey sticks just happened. So Mr. Helium turn around and says “Just kidding! I was doing my best impression of our founder, Mr. Reagle,” (Mr. Reagle is an actual teacher in my school and the workload is rather similar to that, if I do say so myself.) and hands us a packet that we’ll be working on for the first quarter. The packet must weigh 20 pounds. I flip to the back and on the bottom of the last page it says
243. WHAT THE HECK! Then he tells the class to start filling out the vocabulary on packet page one. Wait what about page 394? I flip to that page in the book and that’s where the glossary starts. Great. There must be 30 vocabulary words here. Mass, weight, height, volume, etc. This is insane! I’ve only heard of weight and height, and the definitions are so long. The shortest one is… the amount of force that gravity pulls on your mass. That would make so much sense if I knew what mass was! Whatever. I’ll do it later.
While I’m stuffing this monstrosity of a homework assignment in to my, unknowing of the horrors that are coming its way, folder, Mr helium starts talking.
“So… I’m, as you should know by now, your science teacher for this year. Also I know that this is regular science instead of advanced science but I don’t want this to hold you back. If you feel this is too easy come talk to me. If you feel this is to hard, come talk to me. I have to let you know though, if you want to get into advanced science I would do it as soon as possible so you don’t get to far behind. But it is extremely hard to get in. We don’t want people to get in and not be able to keep up. So if any one and I mean if, anyone gets a 100 on the next test I will talk to you and see where you are at, but only if you want to. Well that’s the bell don’t forget your homework for tomorrow and your first test is 2 weeks from now. See ya.”
I stumbled out of the classroom. It seemed that Mr. Helium just wanted to make my life difficult.
“NERD!” I heard someone shout. I flinched, thinking that the shout was directed at me. Instead, I saw a student with rust-brown hair and a football jersey walking over to a student with a huge afro and a lab coat.
“Yes, Iron, I am aware that I may partake in activities that seem to enhance my understanding of a particular topic. I suppose, for some, that may make me seem, ahh, what’s the word?” I watched in amazement as the student with the afro flipped through a stack of flashcards. “Oh yes. ‘Nerdy,’” he said, showing his friend the card.
“Wow, Einsteinium. You never cease to amaze me,” the student I assumed was Iron marveled, shaking his head.
“Well, yes, I have been studying,” Einsteinium replied.
Their conversation faded as they walked away. I shook myself out, reminding myself that I had band with with Miss Neon next in room 10.
