Chapter 1- Annabeth:

I sat outside the infirmary, nervously drumming my fingers on my knee. My face dripping wet with salty tears, but I didn't bother to wipe them, because then more would fall in their place.

Why Percy? Why couldn't it have been me?

Chiron trots out of the infirmary and over to me, "Annabeth, dear, I think you should come and see him now." All I can do is nod. I shakily stand up and follow the centaur over to the room. Stopping at the door to catch my breath. "How is he?" I say, my voice a whisper.

Chiron swallows hard and blinks back a tear. "It's hard to say. He's still with us, but..." His voice trails off.

My heart beat rockets and more tears fall, "But what?" I cry, my voice cracking. "But I don't know if he'll... He'll..." He stops to wipe a tear, "I don't know if he'll stay with us." I let out a loud, croaking sob. Followed by many more. This can't be happening, this can't be real.

I walk into the infirmary and my heart stops.

He's ghost white and painfully thin. His chest is barely rising and falling, and when it does, it's shaky and infrequent. His eyelids are veiny and his lips are purple.

He looks... Dead
