Flower Boy

He came in every week for flowers.

Every week he would come in with a smile on his face, asking for a small bouquet, ranging from daffodils to carnations to gardenias.

One day I asked him who the special lady was and he blushed crimson.

"More like special guy." He mumbled. I smiled at him.

"Well he sure is lucky, you know." I handed him the small bouquet of carnations and he smiled, thanking me.

I've started to worry about him, though.

He started to come in with bags around his eyes, no pep in his step, barely would talk and gave half-hearted smiles.

One week he never showed up.

Then another.

Then another.

And another.

I knew it was breaching my position as a flower shop owner but I decided to call him.

I had his number saved from a week when he was sick and wanted flowers sent to his boyfriend's work.

I decided to call.

It rang and rang and I thought I was going to have to leave a voicemail but he finally picked up.

"Hello?" It was Troye, but weak and frail.

"Hi-" I cleared my throat. "Hi Troye, I know this is out of my place but this is Tyler from the flower shop off Main Street, I noticed you haven't been here in a few weeks and I was just checking up on you to make sure you're okay."

"I really appreciate it Tyler. I'm... I'm alright." His voice was breaking and I knew I couldn't just say okay and hang up.

"I know we only really know each other on a worker-customer basis but if there's anything you wanna talk about I have time."

"H-he cheated on me. He's been this whole time." He broke down and my heart hurt at the sound of his sobs.

"I'm sorry Troye. You don't deserve that."

We spent a few minutes talking about it until he said he needed to go.

"Wait," I said before he could hang up.

"Yeah?"

"Did you wanna maybe go for coffee Sunday afternoon?" The question hung in the air and each passing second felt like a year.

"Y-yes. I'd like that." I smiled and discussed a good coffee shop to meet at around 3 o'clock.

As soon as the call ended I danced around like a kid on Christmas morning excited for their presents.

Because he was my present.

*Sunday, 2:30*

I looked in my mirror and sighed.

I hope this goes good.

I grab my keys, leave my apartment and lock the door.

I go to my car and start it up, buckling my seatbelt and starting the 15 minute drive to a local coffee shop.

I get there with 10 minutes to spare, ordering a medium iced latte with almond milk and sitting down, tapping my cup with my fingers and glancing around nervously.

I take out my phone and text him letting him know I'm at the shop and scroll through tumblr while I wait for him.

I keep hearing the bell ding from when people exit and enter through the door, and perk up my head to look each time.

I finally see him walk in and he orders something, looking around for me and we lock eyes with each other. My heart flutters as he walks towards me and sits down across from me.

"Hey." I smile and he smiles back halfheartedly, muttering a 'hi'. He's definitely not his old self and it kills me. "How are you?" I ask as I sip at my drink.

He gives me a weak smile.

"I'm... I'm here, you know?" He laughs slightly and I want nothing more than to just hug him and make him forget about all the shit in his life.

"Yeah." I breathe and we just sit there for a few minutes awkwardly. "Listen," I say, breaking the silence. "I'm sorry for calling you. I know it wasn't my place at all and I should've have done that." I blurt out.

"Tyler, it meant a lot to me that you took the time out of your day to call me. Don't apologize for that." I blush slightly and he laughs.

"What?" I ask.

"Oh, nothing. It's just that... your face is almost as red as those carnations I bought the first time I came in." I blush even more and hide my head in my hands. "Aww."

"Stop it!" I giggle.

"You're cute when you blush." He tells me once I finally calm down and I bite my lip.

"Can I... can I ask you something?"

"Yeah, sure."

"Why... why would he do that?" He looks confused. "Your boyfriend- I mean, ex boyfriend. Why would he cheat on you?" He leans back in his chair, his lips curling slightly downward.

"I don't know. I think he was jealous."

"Of what?"

"Well, he told me I spent too much time in your flower shop." I crinkle my eyebrows.

"Did not."

"I know, right? Could never spend too much time in there with you." My heart skips a beat at his words, but I know they're only friendly.

"I'm sorry." I said.

"For what?"

"I feel like I kinda ruined your relationship." He shrugs.

"That's okay. Kinda had feelings for someone else anyways."

Oh.

"Oh, really?" I ask, trying not to sound bitter about it.

"Yeah."

"That's cool. Do you think he likes you?" He shrugs again.

"I feel like he does, maybe a little bit. I mean, he asked me out a few days ago but I can't really tell if it's in a friendly way or not."

"Well what the fuck are you doing here for?" I asked and he laughs at me.

"Tyler, this is the place he wanted to meet." My brain can't really process what he's saying and I splutter out a jumble of words. He laughs at me again and I cover my face with my hands.

"Oh god I'm so dumb." I groan.

"It's okay Ty." He says and I look back up at him.

"D-do you really... like, you're serious?"

"Yes, of course. I'm not that evil." We just look at each other for a minute and I take a sip of my latte. "Thank you for calling me. Once you asked me out I was so happy for the first time in months." I blush again.

"If I had known I would've said something sooner." He smiles.

"I wouldn't have wanted it any other way." His hand grabs mine over the small table and my heart flutters.

And I realized that I should start selling fake flowers.

Because those never die.
