The sharp pain in my shoulder knocked me out for two days. I was in the infirmary again. Without notifying the nurse, I rolled out of bed and walked out. I tried to walk, but my legs gave out. I couldn't stand up. Looking around, I saw a cane, similar to ones grandparents use. I hoisted myself back to a standing position and saw an older nurse just staring at me, smiling and shaking her head. Maybe it was her cane. She had obviously seen the whole thing while standing in a corner behind me. Her kind eyes looked at me intently, as though I had done something amazing. She walked over to me and said
"You may need this wheelchair for a day or two," the corners of her eyes crinkled as she smiled. "just until you regain your strength."
Grateful, I took the chair and wheeled away. I wanted to tell Tobias that I was sorry I was rude, but I knew he would most likely forgive me. it was just a Tobias-y thing to do. I knocked on the door to his room with a hundred beds, and I heard a small voice say "What?" I peeked in, in case it was not a good time for him to talk, and I saw him on Tris's bed, the last bed she slept in.
"Mind if I come in?" I asked timidly, afraid he was too overwhelmed by the death of his girlfriend.
"no, no it's fine. I needed to get on with my day. thanks." he sniffled and wiped his nose with a tissue. Passing by me, he said, "Don't try to flirt with me, I know you like me." Shocked, I yelped, "Who told you? I mean, not that they are right but..." I trailed off. He smiled. "I was joking, sort of."
"Sort of?" I questioned.
"Well, back in Abnegation, you would always twirl your hair..."
"I always do that, see!" I twirled my hair to show him.
"You would never tell me who you liked"
"Why would I ever tell a boy who I liked?"
"Oh, come on! It's obvious, Alisha, I know you like me! I'm not mad, it's actually flattering."
"Oh," I said softly. "how long did you know?"
"Forever ago."
That meant he never liked me back, and worse, he didn't care and lied to me. I thought I kept it a secret! I wheeled past him and rolled down the hall. I wanted to be alone. But of course, I could not get my wish. When does life ever go as planned? Never. Some girl comes up to me and says "HEY! WHY ARE YOU IN A WHEELCHAIR? I THOUGHT YOU COULD WALK?" Nevermind when I told you that she said that, she screamed it! Right in my ear! "I got injured, ok, do you even know what that means? IT MEANS GO AWAY!" I heard her wailing as I rolled away. I was not in a good mood, and that meant trouble for me. Tobias heard everything I had said and scolded me for being rude. "I know you are in a bad mood, but please apologize. She did nothing wrong."
"I was not, she was. She screamed at me! I just told her to go away."
"You could have been nicer, though." Suddenly, I decided I didn't care anymore. "You are not my father. You aren't even my brother. You aren't even a friend, now, please get out of my way before I roll you over." He stepped out of the way and watched as I wheeled myself out of the corridor. Not two minutes had passed before a strange man stepped in front of me."Going somewhere, sweetie?" He said. "I can help you if you are lost, please trust me."
I wouldn't trust this man with my laundry, never mind trusting him to help me. "No, thank you, I will be on my way." He grabbed my shoulder, the one that had been stabbed. "Please, let me help you." He began squeezing, and I began feeling lightheaded. He pressed harder, and I felt dizzy. Then, I passed out. Again.
