An unusual silence was cast over the Birling family. The only sound to be heard was the scrape of knives along plates and the clatter of dishes the cook was cleaning. The family were gathered around a grand wooden table, but their manner was reserved. Even Arthur Birling, who's usual role was to give useless speeches on any subject he found worthy, was silent.

He was right. The inspector truly  had caused "fire and blood and anguish" in the Birling family. These final words floated around Eric's mind, he still couldn't comprehend the inspectors authenticity but had begun to accept that he was not a normal person, his omniscient character frightened him. What else could the inspector possibly know?

Eric tried to look at Gerald, who seemed to be avoiding him. he knew what he was thinking.

"May I be excused?" Shiela asked as she lifted her skirts and exited the room when she achieved her fathers approval.

Gerald had attempted to fix their relationship, mainly for her sake, but Shiela still behaved awkwardly around him, as if she never truly knew what he was up to. 'Well she was right there'  Eric thought.
